"My ancestors were slaughtered by your ilk during the Imjin War. I will never forget your crimes against my people!"
―Yun Pyeong-Gyu to Shimazu Saito, 1725.[src]-[m]

The Imjin War (Korean: 임진왜란; Japanese: 国戦争) was a pair of failed Japanese attempted invasions of Korea in 1592 and 1597 under Toyotomi Hideyoshi,[1] which were successively repelled with the help of the Ming.[2]

War[edit | edit source]

During the war, the Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin secured numerous victories against the Japanese navy, leading to his reputation as a legendary naval commander.[3]

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

The invasions fostered enmity between the two countries' people that endured into the 18th century, with the British Assassin Edward Kenway comparing it to the historic rivalry between the French and the English. The Joseon engineer Yun Pyeong-Gyu's ancestors were killed by the Japanese invaders, leading to his immediate dislike of and distrust towards Shimazu Saito for being a samurai.[4]
