The Imjin War was a pair of Japanese invasions of Korea, first in 1592 with a brief truce in 1597, and a second invasion in 1597, which ened the following year with the withdrawal of Japan's forces from the region.[1] The invasions left a lasting resentment between the populations of the two countries, a feeling Edward Kenway compared to the one between the French and the English.[2]
Yun Pyeong-Gyu, an engineer from the Joseon dynasty, had ancestors that were slaugthered by the invaders, leading to his immediate dislike and distrust towards Shimazu Saito for being a samurai.[2]
