A Puzzlement was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]
Description
Naoe and Yasuke meets a pair of bickering men outside a cave hidden behind an engraved wall.
Dialogue
On the road near the south border of Wakasa, Naoe and Yasuke overheard two women.
- Woman 1: One of the two idiots stepped right in my tea bush. Crushed all the leaves!
- Woman 2: Buffoons. One plucked plums from my tree, then said he was thirsty. I poured him water. Then threw it in his face.
- Woman 1: Good. They better stay away if they know what's good for them.
Naoe and Yasuke followed the dirt path off the main road and found two men bickering.
- Kinu: You should have pushed on that big rock.
- Kane: Idiot! We pushed on it six rocks ago!
- Kinu: No, I think six rocks ago it was this rock.
- Kane: [huffs] You were supposed to be taking notes!
- Naoe/Yasuke: Listen to those two bicker.
Naoe and Yasuke approached the duo.
- Kinu: You're not listening to any of my ideas!
- Kane: Then give me a good one for a change!
- Yasuke: Hello! We could not help but hear your loud argument.
- Naoe: Very loud argument.
Kane made a loud gasp upon seeing Yasuke.
- Kane: The legendary samurai! In the flesh.
- Yasuke: Yasuke, yes. Why the argument?
- Kane: Because this moron can't - wait.
Kane took a closer at Naoe.
- Kane: Isn't that her? The Igan farm girl?
- Kinu: Her? That girl was a kid. This is a woman. And she didn't have that mark on her face.
Naoe frowned upon realizing who they were.
- Yeah, the only mark was on your ass after she kicked it.
- Kinu: Hey! She kicked yours too!
- Naoe: I remember now. You're those two trespassers I scared out of Iga.
- Kinu: I wasn't scared.
- Kane: Tell that to the pants you wet running away.
- Kinu: I told you, they got wet when we ran through the river!
- Naoe: I offered help to you back then, and you didn't take it. You're lost causes.
- Kinu: We are lost causes, but that is why we need help!
- Yasuke: Is there harm in hearing them out?
- Naoe: They're trouble, Yasuke.
- Kane: We took some Igan millet and meat because we were starving. We could have died!
- Kinu: I told him we should have asked for it first.
- Kane: You're asking for it right now, lunkhead.
- Naoe: Get to the point.
- Kinu: The point is we're regular old treasure hunters now! And we think the jackpot is behind this door.
- Kane: Some treasure hunter. One who can't figure out how to open the stupid thing.
- Yasuke: Those gylphs. What language is it?
- Kane: If only we knew, great samurai, sir. We have nothing but these riddles, this... object, and Kinu's feeble mind.
Kane took out a scroll with the riddle and an odd looking object.
- Kinu: Hey!
- Naoe: Shut up and give them to us. We'll see what we can do.
Naoe and Yasuke took possession of the riddle and the item.
- Kinu: They'll figure it out. The door will open.
- Kane: No thanks to you.
Naoe and Yasuke remained in the area for a while longer.
- Kinu: If you wear the ornament, something happens in certain places! I don't know where, or why, but... it does!
- Kane: When we were in the swamp east of here, that ornament thing really started acting up.
Naoe and Yasuke gave the riddle a good read.
Riddle of the Vault in Wakasa
- Near Kaiji's courtyard
Marshlands are full of treasure
Vaulting their secrets
Following the clues, Naoe and Yasuke headed eastwards towards the swamp. As they do so, the ornament began glowing. <tabbber> |-|Naoe=
- Naoe: Hmm. The ornament is... glowing? It must be guiding me somewhere. And I think I'm close.
As she got closer, the ornament glowing at a faster interval.
- Naoe: The ornament feels alive!
As ornament continuing glowing and began producing a blinking sound, Naoe found a glowing glyph on a nearby rock.
- Naoe: So something about the ornament and this spot lights up a glyph. It is a mystery. I guess we'll go tell those two dunces the good news.
</tabber> Naoe and Yasuke returned to where Kinu and Kane were, with the glowing gylph they saw in the swamp now showing up at the door as well.
- Kinu: Hey. They lit up. Something's happening!
- Kane: In your brain? No. To the door? Yes!
They spoke to the duo.
- Kane: Did you do that? Make it glow?
- Yasuke: We did.
- Naoe: We're geniuses. Can we go now?
- Kane: While you were gone, Kinu and I got to talking.
- Kinu: We did?
- Kane: We're done being treasure hunters. We want to work for you two.
- Kinu: Oh. Yeah! We do!
- Naoe: No way.
Naoe turned to a shrugging Yasuke and shook her head.
- Kane: We've been on the run for months! Our sandals are thinner than dried kelp! You must have a camp. We can help you!
- Naoe: You two? In Iga, I beat you up with a stick.
- Kane: Then train us to be great like Yasuke – I mean, like you!
- Naoe: This is a waste of time. They have nothing to offer us.
- Kinu: We do have more scrolls.
- Kane: Oh yeah, a trade! Our riddle scrolls for a home.
Naoe and Yasuke moved away to speak to one another while the two "treasure hunters" talk to themselves.
- Naoe: I don't trust them. They're half-wits.
- Yasuke: We offer help to those who cannot help themselves, remember? And if they are trouble, Tomiko will whip them into shape.
- Naoe: [sighs]
Listening to Yasuke's words, the two returned back to Kane and Kinu.
- Naoe: Fine. But only if you pass a training test. Fail it, and you're out.
- Kinu: Yatta!
- Kane: We'll find a suitable place and report to duty. Here. A scroll to show we're serious.
Kane hands over a scroll to Yasuke before he and Kinu left.
- Naoe: When did you become such a sap?
- Yasuke: There is no crime against stupidity.
- Naoe: There should be.
- Yasuke: [laughs] Come on. A mystery unfolds! You must be a little curious about what is behind the door.
- Naoe: A little. Let's go "train" them.
Outcome
Naoe and Yasuke helped Kinu and Kane solve the first mystery behind the door engraved with gylphs. The two reluctantly agreed to train Kinu and Kane before they could join their group.
