Inner Sanctum of the Templar Order(Revamp & update)

"The human body has its heart. The Earth has its core. All things have a center, whence comes their deepest strength. The Templar Order, too, has its Inner Sanctum. Nine there must be, three times three."

The Ritual Garbs

During Simon Hathaway's initiation into the Inner Sanctum of the Templar Order, he noted that the ritual garb had been made by hand and not machines, ranging from the sheep being hand-sheared and the wool carded, spun and dyed by human labor.[1]

This showed the Templar's ritual garbs were much like those worn by Templars across the centuries, which Simon, as a historian, valued and admired, due to the Templars putting in effort towards genuine authenticity.[1]

Lieutenant is a leadership rank of mid authority that is Second-in-Command to the Grand Master of the Templar Order, alongside Master Templars as Templar leaders of Templar Rites. Its predecessor was Second-in-Command to the Grand Maegester of the Ancients, being one of five Maegesters.

Being part of a Rite leadership, their role under their Grand Master is to uphold the Templar principles while they assisted in leading the Rite to guide humanity for the betterment of society in their aim for peace.

The earliest known individual with the rank of Lieutenant was held by the Ancients Fulke of the Wardens of Relics sect, under Grand Maegester Alfred of Wessex during the Viking expansion of England.

The only known Templars that had the rank of Lieutenant was during the Age of Enlightenment, as the Parisian Rite had three different individuals that served as Lieutenant to the House of Serre, a Templar family who had held the rank of Grand Master for several decades.

Their Grand Master have the authority of their Rite, that Rite is named after a specific geographic region.[1] A Lieutenant would participate in their meetings with other Rites to discuss the politics of their nation, domestic and global, and conditions of the Order itself. Ensuring their brother Templars that whatever direction their Rite would take, it would benefit the Order and adhere to their principles, therefor maintained their international relations.[2]

In terms of internal policies, a Lieutenant is also part of the Grand Master's Rite meetings to plan the direction of their own nation, were they would discuss their plans with their subordinates.[2] They are Seneschals, Advisors, Commanders, Preceptors, Knights, Warriors, Clerics, and finally, the Disciples.[3]

Being themselves a direct subordinate of a Grand Master, they could also be given other duties, such as organizing the training of the next Grand Master, the extent of that training would be sett by the Grand Master. For example, François de la Serre, who approved that Lieutenant Julie de la Serre and the British Templar Frederick Weatherall could conduct the training of swordsmanship to their daughter, Élise de la Serre. While François himself gave her the education of the Templars and their principles.[2]

A Lieutenant can also be punished for breaking their principles, such as Germain that wanted reforms based on the Codex of de Molay, that resulted in exile unless he renounced his views.[4][5] Another Lieutenant can be appointed by the Grand Master afterwards, but not guaranteed as Grand Master de la Serre never appointed a new one following her death from illness.[2]

Inner Sanctum

"You all know as well as I do why the Black Cross was created -- What it means."
―The Black Cross to the Inner Sanctum, lecturing them on its origins, 2017.[src]

After the foundation of the Inner Sanctum, promotions of Grand Masters came under their control.[6] Followed by the foundation of the Black Cross to prevent corruption.[7] Their investigations was notified to the specific Rite investigated to a Grand Master, with instructions that their operations are not to be interfered with, all information in regards to encounters with the Black Cross must be kept silent and the Rites are instructed to assist with anything requested by the Black Cross. As a Black Cross have the authority to do whatever is necessary to find anyone breaking Templar principles within the governing structures of a Rite, including killing any corrupt Templars.[6]

Germain being taken away after his expulsion

At some point since 1768, under the leadership of the Grand Master of the Parisian Rite François de la Serre,[9] François-Thomas Germain became his Lieutenant.[5] As Lieutenant, Germain used his craftsmanship as silversmith and made Templars pins that replaced Templar rings as the Templar's Badge of Office while also functioning as a weapon.[2]

Lieutenant Germain being a Sage, at some point started getting visions of Great towers of gold, cities shining white as silver, these lead him to discover the vault of Jacques de Molay in the Temple in Paris and were he found the Codex Pater Intellectus. Germain came to view the Order as corrupted by wealth and power, then attempted to convince Grand Master de la Serre of the same ideals and was exiled for not renouncing his views under an expulsion ceremony, his only defender was Advisor Marie Lévesque.[4]

By 1774, wife and Templar Julie de la Serre, had become the next Lieutenant of Grand Master de la Serre and secretly started the training of combat for Élise de la Serre and with the British Templar Frederick Weatherall as her teacher. The same year, the influential Carrol Family of the British Rite visited due to their concerns of François' plans for keeping France in order, having been tasked to entertain Mrs. Carroll and her daughter, May. May and Julie discussed change and loyalties, with Julie being clear that she had a moderate position between the talks of overthrowing or maintaining the Monarchy, and wouldn't allow too much influence from his Advisors.[2]

Behind the Scenes

Lieutenant is one of tree known Order of the Ancients ranks that continued into the Templar Order, with the other two being Master Templar/Maegester and their superior, the Grand Master/Grand Maegester.

  • Lieutenant is the only known one without a linguistic name change.

Lieutenant is the only Templar leader in Templar Rites that isn't of mid to hight authority as it isn't in the Inner Sanctum, unlike Grand Masters and Master Templars that are ranks associated with it.

The term Second-in-Command and Lieutenant is used interchangeably in the Assassin's Creed: Unity novel.[2]

It is unknown if Julie de la Serre was present at the exile of François-Thomas Germain, as she isn't seen in the flashback of the event.[4]
