The Imjin War was a pair of Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592 and 1597 which were successively repelled with the help of the Ming.[1] The invasions fostered enmity between the two countries' people that endured into the 18th century; it was a feeling that Edward Kenway compared to the one between the French and the English. The Joseon engineer Yun Pyeong-Gyu's ancestors were killed by the invaders, leading to his immediate dislike of and distrust towards Shimazu Saito for being a samurai.[2]
