"I dream of something greater. A vast kingdom of warriors, in numbers the world has never seen. United under one king. One rule!"
―Harald Fairhair to an assembled althing, 872.[src]-[m]

The Unification of Norway (c. 872) was the process by which the several petty kingdoms in Norway merged under the rule of king Harald Fairhair.

History

On 872, Harald Fairhair invited the various Viking clans to Alrekstad to attend an althing organized by himself, where he proposed the clans unite under his banner. Hjorr Halfsson and Ljufvina Bjarmarsdottir declined to pledge fealty, though surrendered their territory as they took their people overseas. The althing was interrupted by Gorm Kjotvesson of the Wolf Clan, son of the recently deceased Kjotve the Cruel,[1] who tried to swear loyalty to Harald despite his unwanted presence. Harald refused the offer and Gorm attempted to smear the name of the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, which ended in Gorm's exile on pain of death.[2]

Eivor's father, jarl Styrbjorn Sigvaldisson, bent the knee to Harald, much to the outrage of his son Sigurd, who stormed out in protest. Harald cautioned them that though he would welcome their presence, they would be required to serve under him if they chose to stay in Norway.[2] In response, Eivor, Sigurd, and other Raven Clan members would sail to establish their own settlement in England.[3]
