Ágáða was a thrall and, for a time, the adoptive mother of Geirmund and Hámund Hel-hide.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Ágáða gave birth to a son around the time Ljufvina Bjarmarsdottir gave birth to premature twins. Ljufvina, seeing the twins resembled her people and not at all their father Hjorr Halfsson, was scared, thinking that Hjorr would believe she married him already pregnant. Ágáða understood this and they traded children. For four summers, Ágáða raised Geirmund and Hámund as her own children. Bragi Boddason made Ljufvina admit to the subterfuge, and the children were traded back. Along with this, Ljufvina freed Ágáða from slavery and Hjorr gave her and her husband land to live in, though also prohibited Geirmund and Hámund from meeting with her for some time. Her own son would die three summers later.[1]

During a hunting trip, both Hámund and Geirmund were wounded in a wolf attack. Upon learning this, she made an offering to Odin, asking for their cure. After Geirmund decided to leave Avaldsnes for England, he went to see Ágáða one last time. He told her he was leaving and gave her his horse and a bag full of silver, thanking her for being his first mother. She cried, said she was proud of him and wished him well. Geirmund wished her the same and left.[2]
