The Myanmar Civil War, also known as the Burmese Civil War, Burmese Spring Revolution or People's Defensive War, is an ongoing civil war in Myanmar, between the ruling State Administration Council and the exiled National Unity Government. It began in May 2021, three months after the coup d'état which placed the country under military rule. The coup itself was the culmination of decades of armed conflicts across Myanmar, which began after the country gained its independence from the British Empire in 1948.[1]
As of 2023, the war had caused all of Myanmar to be deemed an "off limits" area, making travel there extremely dangerous.[2] Despite this, when Shimazu Sei, Noa Kim, Yuki, and Nathan Zhang traveled to Yangon in search of a Piece of Eden housed within the Shwedagon Pagoda, they were able to easily get past a military checkpoint and enter the city. Nathan speculated that, because the military was so preoccupied with the ongoing war, they did not want to mess with foreigners.[3]
