The portrayal from the comic actually sounds like it plays into the orientalist stereotype that Japanese and Koreans (and Chinese) people have always hated each other for eons. The Imjin War was a pair of Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592 and 1597 which were successively repelled with the help of the Ming.[1] The invasions fostered enmity between the two countries' people that endured into the 18th century; it was a feeling that Edward Kenway compared to the one between the French and the English. The Joseon engineer Yun Pyeong-Gyu's ancestors were killed by the invaders, leading to his immediate dislike of and distrust towards Shimazu Saito for being a samurai.[2]
