Mikawa

Mikawa (三河国; Mikawa no Kuni) was a province of Japan whose territory now consists of the eastern half of Aichi Prefecture in the present day. During the Sengoku period, the province bordered Owari to the west, Mino and Shinano to the north, and Tōtōmi to the east.

History

By 1560, Mikawa became embroiled in the fight between the Assassins and the Templars. Italian Templar and Jesuit priest Paulino Massa met with Imagawa Ujizane, whom he recruited into the Templar Order. Together, they planned to find and steal the Imperial Regalia in order to take control of the country and defeat both their enemies, Oda clan and Matsudaira Takechiyo.

In 1561, however, Massa and Ujizane's plans to attack Igan shinobi master Momochi Sandayu and learn of the Regalia's location failed due to the interference of the Assassins. As a result, Master Assassin Alvaro Catarribera and his apprentice sent their new ally and acolyte Hattori Hanzō back to his homeland to investigate the Templar presence. While there, he caught the attention of fellow retainer to the Matsudaira clan, Watanabe Moritsuna, who took him to meet with Takechiyo.

Meeting with Takechiyo, Hanzō met with the daimyō and learned of his wife Sena and his children being held captive at Imagawa Mansion by Ujizane. Takechiyo also admitted of a growing European presence and mentioned a unique cross around a priest's neck. With this, Hanzō agreed to help Moritsuna and rescue Takechiyo's family.

In 1562, Hanzō and Moritusuna planned a secret infiltration, with Hanzō solely making his way onto the mansion's grounds. Inside, he looked for the captives but came upon a harsh discussion between Imagawa retainer Udono Nagateru and a concubine Okiku. Unfortunately, he witnessed Nagateru poison the young woman over her failed contribution to the clan and moved forward to find Sena and the kids. While there, Hanzō learned of the Templars' business, especially in slavery, and sent a message back to Sandayu and his allies about his findings.

Meanwhile, Hanzō sneaked around the premise to find Takechiyo's family. However, he was seen by Imagawa soldier Amano Kageyasu and nearly killed him. However, Kageyasu offered to help as he grew tired of the Imagawa. Taking him to Sena's cell, Hanzō finds a dead woman and the smell of death. Instantly bereft, Hanzō saw his hopes dashed while Ujizane then found Hanzō there and began to mock him, only to be knocked out by Kageyasu. They later escaped and met up with Moritsuna, despite not having Sena and her children.

While running, Hanzō and Moritsuna noticed Nagateru riding past all of them, while holding Sena hostage, towards Kaminogō Castle. Hanzō pledged to infiltrate the castle alone while Moritsuna and Kageyasu were told to head to Takechiyo. At the castle, Nagateru held Sena and her kids hostage but they were found by Hanzō, who nearly killed Nagateru. However, Massa stopped it while introducing himself, much to Nagateru's chagrin. With this insult, Massa dismissed and killed Nagateru before holding Sena and her children at gunpoint. He then posed a choice to Hanzō, the location of the Imperial Regalia for their lives, while their surroundings became aflame as Takechiyo launched an assault on the castle.

Yet, Sena took it upon herself and held a tantō to her neck, urging Massa to free her kids and keep her alone. Massa agreed and despite taking a moment, Hanzō saved her kids while leaving her with Massa. Also leaving the castle, Massa admitted that Sena's purpose was actually to be used as a means to have Takechiyo's support for his cause. Yet, she suddenly noticed that Hanzō watching her from above.
