Following the Niwa elder's suggestion, Naoe and Yasuke headed to Saifukuji Temple west of Tsuruga. They encountered a noble lying down on a bridge.
Noble 1:Oh! Saifukuji Temple! Your distance is worth every step and every gasp for air that I take. Just... a few... more... steps. The path to enlightenment and peace will open itself to me.
They approached him.
Noble 1:I am on a pilgrimage to Saifukuji Temple. Someone like you could help. Would you carry an old man up the path?
They then picked up and carried the man along their journey up to the temple.
Noble 1:Oh! Not what I meant by "help." Gentle, gentle... My body is fragile! To Saifukuji! We shall be at Saifukuji Temple in no time. Let us be off, young one!
The two of them soon reached the steps of the temple, and began hearing the familiar tune.
Naoe:Annoying and cryptic. Whoever is playing that music means it as a threat.
Yasuke:I need to find the source of the music at Saifukuji Temple.
They soon reached the temple complex.
Naoe:Saifukuji Temple. The place the Niwa elder mentioned. What will I find?
Yasuke:Saifukuji Temple. The Niwa elder gave me this location. What did she want me to find?
They passed by a woman and a man conversing under a gateway.
Woman:Oh, it's you again. Are you still waiting for the itaji tree to bear fruit?
Man:When this tree bears fruit, I will be the first to collect it from the ground! Any day now, I'm sure.
After having gone up some more steps, they set the carried noble down, and he got to his feet.
Noble 1:Ah, Saifukuji. Such beauty. Here, something small for your troubles.
Noble 1:There is a famed Biwa Master at this temple. He likes to play by the lake. I intend to visit him after I recover from this journey.
Naoe and Yasuke proceeded further into the temple and heard some more music.
Naoe:Biwa music.
Yasuke:Ah. Music.
They overheard a group of nobles towards the south of the temple.
Noble 2:The first step to attaining satori is to renounce our material possessions. Would you like to get a bit closer to that goal today?
Noble 3:No, thank you. That will create more suffering for me.
Noble 2:Of course. By the way, your husband's good friend was here the other day. She seemed a bit closer to satori.
Further south, they found a monk.
Buddhist Monk: (hums)
They spoke to him.
Buddhist Monk:Welcome to Saifukuji. Tell me, do you like the peaceful quiet? Or do you prefer the symphony of sound?
Naoe:Music soothes me. It takes me somewhere else, far away.
Buddhist Monk:Good. If you would like to hear a beautiful melody, find the Biwa Master near the lake. He plays with great skill.
Buddhist Monk:Welcome to Saifukuji. Tell me, do you like the peaceful quiet? Or do you prefer the symphony of sound?
Yasuke:The music here is different from what I am used to, but I can appreciate it.
Buddhist Monk:Good. If you would like to hear a beautiful melody, find the Biwa Master near the lake. He plays with great skill.
Naoe and Yasuke approached the main temple building, where some Portuguese traders were admiring the area.
Portuguese Trader 1:Look at the trees, the geography of it all.
Portuguese Trader 2:The architecture is a wonder. Such intricacy. The atmosphere here too - there is a stillness about it.
Portuguese Trader 1:We should go to the back of the temple. I hear there is a beautiful lake there.
Naoe and Yasuke entered the main temple building and found a woman praying in front of the altar.
Woman:Has anyone been so robbed of bliss? Their suffering has been too great, wrought by years of toil and turmoil. So, I beg of you, may the winds guide their hearts. And may wisdom speak to the souls.
The two spoke to the woman.
Woman:Do you understand it? The agony of what has been lost, the endless chase to reclaim the past?
Naoe:I understand it well, but I leave my past where it is and live for my future.
Woman:To have hope is to be alive. In spite of the pain.
Naoe:What brings you pain?
Woman:A future lost. Wakasa was once ruled by Takeda. A powerful but kind clan. But they have fallen from grace. Now all we can do is dream of what could have been, and what will never be. Forgive me, I was lost in prayer. Can I help you?
Naoe:You can. I am looking for a biwa player here at the temple.
Woman:I did hear one earlier. Near the lake.
Naoe:Thank you.
Yasuke:I do. But to dwell on the past would be time wasted in the present.
Woman:To have hope is to be alive. In spite of the pain.
Yasuke:What brings you pain?
Woman:A future lost. Wakasa was once ruled by Takeda. A powerful but kind clan. But they have fallen from grace. Now all we can do is dream of what could have been, and what will never be. Forgive me, I was lost in prayer. Can I help you?
Yasuke:It is kind of you to offer. I am looking for a biwa player.
Woman:I did hear one earlier. Near the lake.
Yasuke:I appreciate your help.
Naoe and Yasuke left the temple and headed west of the temple to the lake, where they heard a biwa being played.
Naoe:The music is coming from there.
Yasuke:There. The source of the music.
They found an elder playing the biwa under a tree and sat behind him.
Naoe:You play well.
Biwa Master:My dear, you gave a scare! Sneaking up like that.
Naoe:Sorry. I was sent by the Niwa elder. I am looking for a biwa tune.
Biwa Master:Ah! Lovely! A new student! First, I need to know your capabilities. Do you play?
Naoe:No. I play the tsuchibue.
Biwa Master:A lovely wind instrument! I favor the strings myself, but I do appreciate it. Has your interest pivoted to the biwa, then?
Naoe:No lessons for me, thank you. I am searching for a specific melody. Sad, and soothing.
Biwa Master:There is no question that music cannot answer! It tells a story without words. Listen.
The biwa master began playing a tune while singing along.
Biwa Master:A day out in the town, the smell of grass and a moment with loved ones. A happy day.
He then played another tune.
Biwa Master:Now this piece is one of a kind. Melancholic, dreaming of what could be. A memory, a distant past.
Naoe:I know this melody. This is it.
Biwa Master:You do? It's an original, composed by one of my students.
Naoe:Who?
The biwa master stopped playing and took a big sigh before speaking.
Biwa Master:Takeda Motoaki. One of my best. This piece was a tribute to what his clan lost... and his dreams of the past.
Naoe:Like a memory of home. Does he still come here?
Biwa Master:No. He was like a son to me. But then he started to deal with wicked people and dark deeds. Cruel pirates, staining the surf red with blood. The people have suffered so dearly in their wake. Perhaps now you could help me. Help Wakasa.
If the notice in Tsuruga requesting people to "Help Wakasa" against piracy had not yet been read:
Naoe:How?
If the notice in Tsuruga had been read:
Naoe:It was you who wrote that notice.
Biwa Master:Find these pirates. End them. Set us free from fear. And return to me when it is done.
Naoe agreed to his request and bid him farewell before leaving.
Naoe:Takeda Motoaki... what do you have against the Niwa clan?
If Hiruga Bay was investigated already, Naoe planned on going after their target next.
Naoe:Takeda Motoaki is behind the music. He is the one we seek. Lord Nagahide should know where to find him.
Yasuke:That is a beautiful tune.
Biwa Master:Oh. You gave me a fright!
Yasuke:I am sorry. I am looking for something... a melody. The Niwa Elder from Tsuruga sent me.
Biwa Master:A student of mine! Did she send you to learn from me?
Yasuke:Not now. However I do have something to ask. I am looking for a tune. Maybe you can help?
Biwa Master:There is no question that music cannot answer! It tells a story without words. Listen.

He then played another tune.
Biwa Master:Now this piece is one of a kind. Melancholic, dreaming of what could be. A memory, a distant past.
Yasuke:This piece... I recognize it.
Biwa Master:You do? It's an original, composed by one of my students.
Yasuke:Who?
Biwa Master:Takeda Motoaki. One of my best. This piece was a tribute to what his clan lost... and his dreams of the past.
Yasuke:It is warm and sad. Does he still come here?
Biwa Master:No. He was like a son to me. But then he started to deal with wicked people and dark deeds. Cruel pirates, staining the surf red with blood. The people have suffered so dearly in their wake. Perhaps now you could help me. Help Wakasa.

Biwa Master:Find these pirates. End them. Set us free from fear. And return to me when it is done.
Yasuke agreed to his request and bid him farewell before leaving.
Yasuke:The musician is Takeda Motoaki... What does he want from the Niwa clan?
If Hiruga Bay was investigated already, Yasuke planned on going after their target next.
Yasuke:Takeda Motoaki is behind the music. He is the one we seek. Lord Nagahide should know where to find him.
Naoe and Yasuke traced the tune to a biwa master, who told them it belonged to his former student, Takeda Motoaki, who he said had dealings with wicked men and pirates. The elder master requested their help to eliminate the pirates plaguing Wakasa and the people.
