Following the Niwa elder's suggestion, Naoe and Yasuke headed to Saifukuji Temple west of Tsuruga. They passed by a group of nobles near a bridge.
Noble:Oh! Saifukuji Temple! Your distance is worthy every step and every gasp for air that I take.
The two of them soon reached the steps of the temple, and began hearing the familiar tune.
Naoe:Annoying and cryptic. Whoever is playing that music means it as a threat.
They soon reached the temple complex.
Naoe:Saifukuji Temple. The place the Niwa elder mentioned. What will I find?
They passed by a woman and a man conversing under a gateway.
Woman:Oh, it's you again. Are you still waiting for the itaji tree to bear fruit?
Man:When this tree bears fruit, I will be the first to collect it from the ground! Any day now, I'm sure.
Going up the steps, they overheard a group of nobles.
Noble 1:The first step to attaining satori is to renounce our material possessions. Would you like to get a bit closer to that goal today?
Noble 2:No, thank you. That will create more suffering for me.
Noble 1:Of course. By the way, your husband's good friend was here the other day. She seemed a bit closer to satori.
Naoe and Yasuke visited the main temple building and found a woman praying in front of the altar.
Woman:Has anyone been so robbed of bliss? Their suffering has been too great, wrought by years of toil and turmoil. So, I beg of you, may the winds guide their hearts. And may wisdom speak to the souls.
The two spoke to the woman.
Woman:Do you understand it? The agony of what has been lost, the endless chase to reclaim the past?
Naoe:I understand it, but I leave my past where it is and live for my future.
Woman:To have hope is to be alive. In spite of the pain.
Naoe:What brings you pain?
Woman:A future lost. Wakasa was once ruled by Takeda. A powerful but kind clan. But they have fallen from gace. Now all we can do is dream of what could have been, and what will never be. Forgive me, I was lost in prayer. Can I help you?
Naoe:You can. I am looking for a biwa player here at the temple.
Woman:I did hear one earlier. Near the lake.
Naoe:Thank you.
Naoe and Yasuke left the temple and head west of the temple to the lake, where they heard a biwa being played.
Naoe:The music is coming from there.
They found an elder playing the biwa under a tree and sat behind him.
Naoe:You play well.
Biwa Master:My dear, you gave me a scare! Sneaking up like that.
Naoe:Sorry. I was sent by the Niwa elder. I am looking for a biwa tune.
Biwa Master:Ah! Lovely! A new student! First, I need to know your capabilities. Do you play?
Naoe:No. I play the tsuchibue.
Biwa Master:A lovely wind instrument! I favor the strings myself, but I do appreciate it. Has your interest pivoted to the biwa, then?
Naoe:No lessons for me, thank you. I am searching for a specific melody. Sad, and soothing.
Biwa Master:There is no question that music cannot answer! It tells a story without words. Listen.
The biwa master began playing a tune while singing along.
Biwa Master:A day out in the town, the smell of grass and a moment with loved ones. A happy day.
He then played another tune.
Biwa Master:Now this piece is one of a kind. Melancholic, dreaming of what could be. A memory, a distant past.
Naoe:I know this melody. This is it.
Biwa Master:You do? It's an original, composed by one of my students?
Naoe:Who?
The biwa master stopped playing and took a big sigh before speaking.
Biwa Master:Takeda Motoaki. One of my best. This piece was a tribute to what his clan lost... and his dreams of the past.
Naoe:Like a memory of home. Does he still come here?
Biwa Master:No. He was like a son to me. But then he started to deal with wicked people and dark deeds. Cruel pirates, staining the surf red with blood. The people have suffered so dearly in their wake. Perhaps now you could help me. Help Wakasa.
Naoe:How?
Biwa Master:Find these pirates. End them. Set us free from fear. And return to me when it is done.
Naoe agreed to his request and bid him farewell before leaving.
Naoe:Takeda Motoaki... what do you have against the Niwa clan? Takeda Motoaki is behind the music. He is the one we seek. Lord Nagahide should know where to find him.
Naoe and Yasuke traced the tune to a biwa master, who told them it belonged to his former student, Takeda Motoaki, who he said had dealings with wicked men and pirates. The elder master requested their help to eliminate the pirates plaguing Wakasa and the people.
