A member of the Vanir, he was the son of Njörðr and twin brother of Freyja. He was regarded as the legendary antecedent of the Svear succession of kings.

Biography

Lord of Vanaheimr, one of the Nine Realms of the Isu Era, Freyr led the Vanir during their last battles with the Æsir of Asgard under Odin. The hostilities were finally brought to a close when the realms were unified through a political marriage between Odin and Freyr's sister Freyja.[2] In the end, the siblings became two of the Æsir's most trusted allies.

As the Great Catastrophe approached, Freyr and the other eight Norse Isu uploaded their DNA data into Yggdrasil to be later redistributed into the human gene pool.[3] Millennia later, Freyr was successfully reincarnated as Harald Fairhair.[4]

Legacy and influence

Freyr had a totem named after him in the popular dice game Orlog, played in the 9th century. The piece "Freyr's Gift" would earn players additional icons of whichever die face was in majority. An Anglo-Saxon man in Lunden, Wessex possessed the piece, which he gave to the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan after being defeated.[5]
