Test of Adaptability

Test of Adaptability was a virtual representation of one of Kassandra's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Description

Kassandra was tasked by the mysterious woman to acquire a key to properly explore an island wreathed in fire and smoke.

Dialogue

Kassandra returned to the graveyard of Megara and spoke with the hermit, who bowed to Kassandra and gestured to the statue of the owl above the graveyard.

• Hermit: I knew you'd be back. The owl knows. She's Athena's favorite bird, you know.
• Kassandra: I'm here for the key to the vault.
• Hermit: Then what are you doing here? That's nearly ridiculous.
• Kassandra: So you're telling me it's not here.
• Hermit: I hid it somewhere safe. It's underwater in the Ariabignes Shipwreck.
• Kassandra: That doesn't sound very safe.
• Hermit: How could it not be safe, surrounded by so many defenders?
• Kassandra: Why do I never get the easy jobs?
• Hermit: Whooo knows?

Kassandra returned to the graveyard of Megara and spoke with the hermit, who bowed to Kassandra and gestured to the statue of the owl above the graveyard.

• Kassandra: I'm here for the key to the vault.
• Hermit: Then what are you doing here? That's nearly ridiculous.
• Kassandra: So you're telling me it's not here.
• Hermit: I hid it somewhere safe. It's in an abandoned camp on Aegina island.
• Kassandra: That doesn't sound very safe.
• Hermit: How could it not be safe, surrounded by so many defenders?
• Kassandra: Why do I never get the easy jobs?
• Hermit: Whooo knows?

Before leaving, Kassandra spoke to the hermit once more.

• Hermit: Good luck finding the key!

Kassandra left for the shipwreck or the abandoned camp. Upon her arrival, Kassandra dealt with the "defenders" and found the Foundry of Hephaistos Tomb Key in the western portion of the sunken ship's hull or in the camp against some rocks.

• Kassandra: I found the key. Time to return to that strange woman.

With the key recovered, she returned to the mysterious woman.

• Kassandra: I found your key. Your associate certainly kept it well-protected.
• Mysterious Woman: He ought to have, I paid him well enough to do so.
• Kassandra: Where exactly are you getting your drachmae from?
• Mysterious Woman: I have very few needs and spend only on what I find important. I'm very nearly thrifty.
• Kassandra: Now that I have the key, is there anything else I need to prepare to visit the island of fire?
• Mysterious Woman: You tell me, misthios. Do you feel prepared to explore the Foundry of Hephaistos?
• Kassandra: Wait, you're not going to ask me a strange question first?
• Mysterious Woman: Perhaps I'll think of one later.
• Kassandra: I'm ready to explore that island.
• Mysterious Woman: Very good. You are proving your worth.
• Kassandra: Am I now? I'm impressed.
• Mysterious Woman: There is an island swathed with clouds of smoke, where the earth blazes with fire. It's called the Foundry of Hephaistos. A legendary helmet is kept there. Bring it here so I might study it.
• Kassandra: Seems like a dangerous journey for just a helmet.
• Mysterious Woman: It's not nearly the only treasure there. You can keep anything else you find.
• Kassandra: All right, I'll go to the island and find the helmet.

Outcome

Kassandra recovered the key before heading to the mysterious woman's next destination.

Behind the scenes

The location of this quest that the hermit sends Kassandra on varies depending on earlier player choices with the prior two memories "Test of Character" and "Test of Faith", in that it will be the location players had not yet had the opportunity to visit. If they had fought sharks at the Ariabignes Shipwreck in "Test of Character", they will be sent to fight the Aeginan lions that would have been in "Test of Faith", and vice versa.
