The Keeper, a Killer

The Keeper, a Killer was a virtual representation of one of Kassandra's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2018 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.

Description

Kassandra recovered the recipe to the eternal flame, but Adonis' rebels continued their campaigns against Persephone's forces. Hermes beseeched Kassandra for aid in dealing with them.

Dialogue

Kassandra spoke to Hermes at the Dionysian Hemicycle as Adonis' rebellion reached a tipping point.

• Hermes: The humans are after us—you, me, Persephone—anyone not like them.
• Kassandra: I've seen it too. War has come to Elysium.

Kassandra and Hermes walked to the edge of the hemicycle to observe Persephone's Lost Outpost, where the humans mingled.

• Hermes: We must crush the force behind the chaos. Let's fight for Persephone.
• Kassandra: You're so worried about Persephone you can't even see you're in just as much danger.

Hermes brushed her off.

• Hermes: You keep the eternal flame out of the hands of the humans, and you went unseen. We have the upper hand—we just have to strike.

• Hermes: You want Adonis to have the key to the eternal flame, fine. But that just means I fight harder.

• Kassandra: Calm yourself, Hermes. It's not like you're going to go on a rampage.
• Hermes: And why not? There are so-called captains guiding the human forces. They invited chaos into this realm, so let's show them chaos.

Accept – Let's kill the captains.You're no murderer.Leave – I need more time.

• Kassandra: Fine, I'll kill the captains.

Kassandra looked out at Persephone's Lost Outpost, agreeing to Hermes request.

• Kassandra: At least when you asked me to steal, it was from thieves. You're not a murderer, Hermes.

• Hermes: You made me look like a fool when I sent you to Kyros. But I still can come back from that and prove my worth.
• Kassandra: I told you we were diverted.

• Hermes: You made me look like a fool when I sent you to Kyros. But I still can come back from that and prove my worth.
• Kassandra: I told you, that was Kyros' fault, not yours.

• Hermes: Maybe not, but if Persephone doesn't love me for who I am, she'll love me for who I'm willing to become.
• Kassandra: So others should die for your devotion?

• Hermes: It doesn't matter. Please, I'm begging you, my friend. Help me to help her.

Accept – We'll kill the captains.I won't do it.

• Kassandra: Fine. I'll kill the captains.

• Kassandra: You think that your obsession with Persephone entitles you to her love. It doesn't. She will never love you, Hermes, and no amount of killing will change that.

Hermes' rage surfaced. He grabbed Kassandra by the throat and threw her across the hemicycle.

• Hermes: Enough!

Kassandra leapt to her feet and readied herself for battle as Hermes lashed out at her with powers and techniques made possible by the Spear and Staff. Their battle continued until Hekate ran up to stop them.

If Kassandra defeated HermesIf Kassandra and Hermes fought to a draw

• Hekate: Stop! You're going to kill him!

• Hekate: Stop, both of you!

• Kassandra: What are you doing here?
• Hekate: Don't question me—thank me for stopping you both before you do something you'll regret.

Kassandra grunted and brushed her off. She turned her back on the two Isu.

• Hermes: This isn't over.
• Hekate: Stand down, both of you. You still have your parts to play in all of this. Now stop bickering and fulfill them.

Hekate ushered Hermes out of the hemicycle. Both he and Kassandra left their battle intact, but their friendship did not.

• Kassandra: I can't believe we're even having this conversation. Give me some time to think

Kassandra took some time to think and returned.

• Hermes: If we kill their so-called captains, the humans will scramble. Help me make this right.

• Hermes: I don't care what happens to me. You were caught when we stole back the eternal flame. The humans will retaliate for what we've done.

• Hermes: I don't care what happens to me. Adonis has the recipe to the eternal flame, and you were spotted when we tried to get it back. The humans who stole it are going to retaliate.

• Kassandra: What do you propose? That we kill them all?
• Hermes: What choice do we have? Chaos came for us, and soon there will be blood on our hands.

Accept – The humans have to die.You're no murderer.Leave – I need more time.

• Kassandra:

Kassandra looked out at Persephone's Lost Outpost, agreeing to Hermes request.

Helping Hermes

Kassandra and Hermes traveled to the outpost while Ikaros surveyed from a distance.

(If "People want her overthrown" was chosen in The Keeper and Kyros)

• Hermes: Thank you. You know, when you told me people wanted Persephone overthrown, I wondered if you were talking about yourself.
• Kassandra: I'm sure you did.

• Hermes: I cannot let you do this alone, my friend. Let's fight side by side.

Let's do it together.I need to do this alone.

• Kassandra: All right. I've never fought alongside a god before. This should be... messy.

They strode up the stairs into the outpost proper to find their targets.

• Hermes: For eternity, Elysium has been a place of peace. If we do this, maybe peace will return.
• Kassandra: Maybe, but war has a way of following me wherever I go.

They identified their targets and attacked them.

• Hermes: There they are. For Persephone!
• Hermes: We were friends!

They repelled Kassandra's attacks.

• Hermes: I'll stop them, my friend!

They killed the first target.

• Hermes: Die, human!

They killed all of their targets as panic rippled through the crowd of revelers.

• Hermes: We did it! Now let's get out of here.

They escaped the crowds back to the hemicycle at the bottom of the stairs.

• Hermes: It's been a long time since I had to use this blade, my friend.

We're not friends.Persephone isn't worth this.That did feel good.

• Kassandra: Don't call me friend, Hermes. We're done.
• Hermes: What? But we did it, and I have you to thank!
• Kassandra: You used me just like Persephone's used you.
• Hermes: You're wrong.
• Kassandra: I've tried to tell you, but you haven't listened—she doesn't love you.
• Hermes: You're wrong. She will love me, and I will always love her. I'll do anything, anything, to prove that. Even killing you.
• Kassandra: So it's come to this.
• Hermes: You're not a friend. You're an outsider. If you cross my path again, I will treat you the way Persephone treats outsiders.

Hermes stormed off, his friendship with Kassandra broken. Kassandra yelled after him.

• Kassandra: Maláka!

Kassandra's frustration with Hermes boiled over.

• Kassandra: Can't you see now that Persephone was never worth it?
• Hermes: What? But we did it, and I have you to thank!
• Kassandra: You used me just like Persephone's used you.
• Hermes: You're wrong.
• Kassandra: I've tried to tell you, but you haven't listened—she doesn't love you.
• Hermes: You're wrong. She will love me, and I will always love her. I'll do anything, anything, to prove that. Even killing you.
• Kassandra: So it's come to this.
• Hermes: You're not a friend. You're an outsider. If you cross my path again, I will treat you the way Persephone treats outsiders.

Hermes stormed off, his friendship with Kassandra broken. Kassandra yelled after him.

• Kassandra: Maláka!

• Kassandra: You're right. It felt good to fight with a friend.
• Hermes: You're quite the warrior. But the war is just beginning.

Kassandra thought for a moment, then folded her arms.

• Kassandra: It is.
• Hermes: I should tell Persephone what's happened. I know she will join me in this battle. Will you?

• Hermes: Persephone needs to know what we've done. I'm going to her. If she rises to battle... Will you join us?
• Kassandra: One way or another.
• Hermes: Until then, my friend.

Hermes took his leave, and Kassandra stared out at Pherephassa Point.

• Kassandra: I'll need to do this alone, Hermes. But don't worry—you can still take the credit.

Kassandra entered the outpost proper and killed all of her human targets.

• Kassandra: That's all the humans. I'll let Hermes know.

Kassandra returned to Hermes.

• Hermes: You're back. Because of us—because of you—Persephone is safe. Thank you, my friend.

We're not friends.Persephone isn't worth this.You're welcome.

• Kassandra: Don't call me friend, Hermes. We're done.
• Hermes: What? But we did it, and I have you to thank!
• Kassandra: You used me just like Persephone's used you.
• Hermes: You're wrong.
• Kassandra: I've tried to tell you, but you haven't listened—she doesn't love you.
• Hermes: You're wrong. She will love me, and I will always love her. I'll do anything, anything, to prove that. Even killing you.
• Kassandra: So it's come to this.

• Kassandra: No need to thank me. I'm sure you'd have done the same if you had to.
• Hermes: Modest and deadly. Impressive. But the war is just beginning.

Kassandra thought for a moment, then folded her arms.

• Kassandra: It is.
• Hermes: I should tell Persephone what's happened. I know she will join me in this battle. Will you?
• Kassandra: One way or another.
• Hermes: Until then, my friend.

Hermes took his leave, and Kassandra stared out at Pherephassa Point.

Outcome

Kassandra either furthered along her friendship with Hermes, or ended it, based on the actions he wished to take in Persephone's name against Adonis' rebels.

Trivia

• If Hermes is fought by refusing to kill the human targets, the "fought to a draw" outcome is determined when he deals significant damage to the player. However, if they have very low Health (possible, for example, with the Falx of Olympos or a weapon that uses its Engraving equipped, which hard-caps Health to 25%), or Hermes deals enough damage in a single combo (highly possible with difficulty-scaling), he will move immediately into the kill animation for sword-wielding soldiers, meaning the player will be killed as such and de-synchronize.
• This quest is a pre-requisite for the memory "A Life for a Life", which is in turn a pre-requisite for "The Beacons Are Lit".
