"Tovarich! The fifth army is here! Bring the news to Trotsky. It's time to retake the city."
―A Red Army officer to Jānis Judiņš, 1918.[src]-[m]

The Kazan Operation was an attempt by the Red Army to retake the city of Kazan from an anti-Bolshevik alliance of the White Army, the People's Army of Komuch, and the Czechoslovak Legion in September 1918.

During the conflict, the Russian Assassin Nikolai Orelov and Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna travelled to Kazan to find Leon Trotsky, who was overseeing the Red Army troops in the city. Leaving Anastasia behind to safeguard the Precursor box, Nikolai traversed the city to reach Trotsky's home, as he believed his friend would be able to secure their safe transport to Moscow.[1]

However, Trotsky, believing Anastasia to be too dangerous as a symbol of the Tsarist autocracy to live, betrayed Nikolai to the Russian Templars, who tortured him for Anastasia's location.[1] After Nikolai failed to return, Anastasia realized he had been captured and mounted a rescue mission, ultimately managing to free the Assassin.[2] The two then escaped Kazan by stealing a boat from the docks, just as the fighting between the Red Army and its opponents began.[3]

After three days of battle, the Red Army ultimately emerged victorious and recaptured Kazan, although most of the Whites managed to escape on the Volga.[4]
