Mímir

Mímir, or Mim is one of the Æsir gods of Germanic mythology, renowned for his wisdom and knowledge. He was beheaded during the Æsir-Vanir War. Afterwards, Odin reanimated Mímir’s head so that he could learn his secret knowledge as counsel.

Mythology

Mímir came into contact with Odin when the latter arrived to drink from the well he owned in Jötunheimr. He informed Odin that in order to drink from it, and attain higher knowledge, he had to make a sacrifice. Odin offered his left eye, and in so doing, infused his spirit into the well.[1]

Mímir later was one of the two Æsir hostages Odin sent to Vanaheimr after the Æsir-Vanir War. Yet the Vanir gods saw through the ruse and cut off Mímir’s head. Odin had the head reanimated by embalming it with herbs and sacred magic, which gave it the power to speak and reveal secrets to him.[2]

Legacy and influence

Mímir had a totem named after him in the popular dice game Orlog, played during the 9th century. The piece "Mímir's Wisdom" would grant additional favor to a player for each damage dealt by their opponent. A Norse man in Picheringa, Eurviscire possessed the piece, which he gave to the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan after being defeated.[3]
