Ægir was a jötunn and a personification of the sea in Norse mythology. He and his wife Rán were parents to nine daughters who were said to represent the waves.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Ægir appeared in the visions of the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan as she relived the memories of Havi via an herbal concoction.[2] In them, he played host to Havi on his arrival to Jötunheimr. Prior to Havi's visit, Ægir lost a wager to Suttungr and had to give up his magic cauldron which he had received from Thor.[3] However, while in transit, the cauldron was stolen by the sons of Hymir, its original owner. Ægir tasked Havi with recovering the cauldron and delivering it to Suttungr for a feast he was throwing.[4]
Legacy and influence[edit | edit source]
During the 9th century, the Viking Dalla Aegirsdottir of the Raven Clan claimed that Ægir was her father, having been orphaned at an early age and left with no memory of her parents.[5]
When Geirmund Hel-hide met the Isu blacksmith Völund after a near-death drowning, he initially confused him for Ægir and asked if that was indeed the being's name. However, the smith dodged the question and only said the Viking could call him "Völund".[6]
