I wanted to ask you something. Which is... what's your name?
This article title is conjecture. Although the article subject is canon, no official name for it has been given.
"This sword was powered not by conquest and pain, but by faith in doing the right thing. 'If the heart is strong it will not break.'"
―Simon Hathaway, 2016.[src]

Sword of Eden #1 is one of the Swords of Eden, bladed artifacts created by the Isu scientist Hephaestus to be used during the War of Unification. These Pieces of Eden seemed to grant their bearers great power and leadership, and were later used by influential humans in battle. It was designated Piece of Eden 25 by Abstergo Industries.

This particular Sword was long thought to have been damaged during the French Revolution, but Professor Simon Hathaway, a Templar historian who was in the process of exploring the genetic memories of his ancestor Gabriel Laxart in 2016, discovered that the Sword had been missing a vital component called the Heart that prevented it from fully functioning since the Hundred Years' War.

History[edit | edit source]

Creation[edit | edit source]

The Sword of Eden was created by Hephaestus, "the maker", during the Isu Era to bring about the end of the War of Unification.[2] Although effective in its own right, the weapon was designed to work in sync with a spherical, scarlet Piece of Eden known as the Heart which sat inside the Sword's pommel.[5]

Middle Ages[edit | edit source]

By the early 14th century, the Sword and the Heart were in possession of the Knights Templar. In 1307, the Templars were branded heretics by Pope Clement V, with their base, the Parisian Temple, subsequently being attacked by King Philip IV's forces.[6]

Jacques de Molay's advisor returning the Sword to its resting place

During this assault, Grand Master Jacques de Molay tasked his advisor with hiding the Sword. The advisor obliged, concealing the Sword along with de Molay's codex, the Codex Pater Intellectus, within a secret underground chamber, shortly before he was killed by the Assassin Thomas de Carneillon.[6] De Molay, however, had removed the Heart from the blade and, while in prison awaiting execution, buried it away within some graffiti on the wall of his cell in the Château de Chinon.[5]

In 1429, during the Hundred Years' War, Jeanne d'Arc, guided by her 'voices', obtained the Heart during her stay at the Château de Chinon's Coudray Tower while awaiting an audience with the then uncrowned Charles VII. She later obtained the Sword itself, which at some point had been recovered and buried underneath the Church of Saint-Catherine at Sainte-Catherine-de-Fierbois. Jeanne used the Sword's full power sparingly, as she was ignorant of its true nature.[5]

After many successful battles using the Sword to inspire her comrades and cow their enemies, Jeanne lost it during the Siege of Paris, where it was recovered by Templar agents and placed back in the secret chamber. The Heart, however, was thrown into the Seine by Geoffroy Thérage, believing it to be the unburning heart of Jeanne d'Arc after her execution.[5]

French Revolution[edit | edit source]

Germain wielding the Sword

In 1794, during the French Revolution, the Sword was acquired by the Templar Grand Master François-Thomas Germain, who wielded it during his fight with Arno Dorian and Élise de la Serre inside the Parisian Temple. The Piece of Eden granted Germain extraordinary abilities, such as teleportation and emitting deadly energy blasts. However, in a reckless flurry of attacks, Élise struck a blow to the Sword which destabilized its power source.[7]

When Germain attempted to retaliate with another energy blast, the Sword malfunctioned, with the subsequent explosion demolishing much of the Temple, killing Élise, and mortally wounding Germain himself. After the battle, the weapon ended up in Arno's possession. While it lost its advanced abilities, it remained a deadly blade in its own right.[7]

Modern times[edit | edit source]

By 2016, the depowered Sword was held once again by the Templars, being displayed in Alan Rikkin's office in London. That year, Simon Hathaway, a newly inducted member of the Inner Sanctum of the Templar Order, was given one week to attempt to find a way to fix the Sword by diving into the genetic memories of his ancestor, Gabriel Laxart, who had served under Jeanne d'Arc. While reliving the memories, Simon was given access to the Sword directly to aid in his investigation.[5]

After figuring out that the Heart was the missing component of the Sword and that Rikkin was sabotaging his investigation, Hathaway escaped from the Abstergo Industries offices with the Sword in order to find the Heart. Once he recovered it, he presented the now complete artifact to the Inner Sanctum members in London without Rikkin's interference. After the Sword was restored, it was returned to Rikkin's office.[5]

Description
This weapon is a relic of the First Civilization. Whatever powered its remarkable abilities is broken, but the blade is still deadly sharp.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Following Assassin's Creed: Valhalla's updates that added the Tombs of the Fallen, Eivor Varinsdottir can acquire a weapon called The Blazing Sword from within the Eden Ring Station. While it bears a striking resemblance to the Sword of Eden, it is unknown if they are meant to be the same item.
