The Siege of Bergen op Zoom was an attack by the French Army on the fortified city of Bergen op Zoom in the Dutch Republic during the War of the Austrian Succession. The fortress was defended by Dutch, Austrian, British, and German forces that supported the Pragmatic Sanction, who were ultimately defeated after seventy days of brutal siege. The British garrison, deeming Bergen op Zoom lost, evacuated the city, allowing it to be sacked by the French.[1]
The British lieutenant-colonel Edward Braddock commanded the Coldstream Guards during the siege and enlisted the help of fellow Templar Haytham Kenway to defend the fortress.[2] Following the French's victory, Braddock and Haytham escaped from the besieged city on ships; as they did so, a man asked for passage for himself and his family, but Braddock coldly refused. When the man called him craven, Braddock responded by ordering the entire family's execution, an act which appalled Haytham.[3]
