Bergen op Zoom, also spelled Bergen-op-Zoom, is a city and municipality in the southwestern Netherlands, located in the province of North Brabant.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1747, during the War of the Austrian Succession, the city was the site of a siege by the French Army that lasted seventy days. The Templars Haytham Kenway and Edward Braddock, the latter of whom served as a lieutenant-colonel in the British Army, took part in the defense of Bergen op Zoom,[1] but were ultimately defeated. They subsequently evacuated the city, which was sacked by the French.[2]

During the evacuation, a man asked for passage for himself and his family aboard one of Braddock's ships but was coldly denied. After the man called him craven, Braddock responded by ordering his executioner Slater to murder the entire family, much to Haytham's horror.[2]
