Angkor Wat, built atop the Forgotten Temple

The Forgotten Temple is an Isu complex located underneath the Angkor Wat temple in Angkor, Cambodia. The temple is connected to a set of three Pieces of Eden, whose full potential could only be unlocked inside the complex.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Golden Age of Piracy[edit | edit source]

By the early 18th century, rumors of the complex's existence had spread throughout Southeast Asia, where locals began referring to the site as the "Forgotten Temple".[2] Around this time, one of the three Pieces of Eden, a lotus-shaped disk, came to be stored within the temple.[3] During his travels, the Dutch navigator Hendrik found both the temple and its artifact, but was unable to claim the latter. Intending to return to the site at a later date, he wrote down clues to its location in his sea log, which he encrypted and split into two halves to prevent the complex from being found by unworthy individuals.[4]

In 1725, the Forgotten Temple was sought after by multiple factions intending to claim its ancient knowledge and power for themselves. Following in Hendrik's footsteps, these groups raced to find the temple first, as well as retrieve the other two Pieces of Eden in Southeast Asia. The Chinese Assassins led by their Mentor Xiao Han and their ally, the businesswoman Lee Huiyin, managed to secure the first artifact, a crescent amulet,[5] while the second, a lantern-shaped orb, was eventually claimed by the Templars of the East India Company led by Grand Master Alan Jacob.[6]

Meanwhile, the British Assassin Edward Kenway and his organization, the Zhang Wei Union, sought to retrieve all three Pieces of Eden so they may safeguard them. Thanks to Edward's visions that he experienced during the brief time he held the first artifact,[3] the Union members learned about the Forgotten Temple's location and organized an expedition to find it before their enemies.[7]

Modern times[edit | edit source]

In 2023, through the genetic memories of Shimazu Saito relived by her descendant Shimazu Sei, the Templar front company Abstergo Industries learned about the Forgotten Temple's location in Angkor. After retrieving two of the Pieces of Eden, they sent agents to survey Angkor and find the complex, while their engineers worked on a replacement device for the final artifact, believing that the combined power of the three Pieces would allow them to establish their vision of a New World Order.[1]

Meanwhile, an alliance between the Zhawang Corporation, the Assassins, and DedSec sought to stop the Templars' plans. After saving Sei from Abstergo's captivity, thus preventing the Templars from extracting more information from her, Noa Kim relived the memories of his ancestor Edward Kenway in the Brahman 3.0 to find the Forgotten Temple before Abstergo.[8]
