The Battle of Quiberon Bay (French: Bataille des Cardinaux) was a naval engagement between the French and British Royal Navies on 20 November 1759, during the Seven Years' War.

History[edit | edit source]

The battle was a result of French plans to strike directly at mainland Britain by invading Scotland. Led by the flagship Formidable, a French fleet sailed towards Great Britain, but the British sent their own fleet to intercept the French armada at Quiberon Bay.[1]

The Colonial Templar Shay Cormac, captaining the Morrigan and assisted by two British brigs, was the first to confront the French fleet. Before any shots could be exchanged, however, the British vessels were ambushed by fireships from all sides, forcing Shay to use the Morrigan's armaments to sink them.[2]

Once the fireships had been destroyed, the Formidable herself appeared to confront the Morrigan. With British reinforcements still underway, the Morrigan fought the Formidable alone. When the French flagship was severely damaged, more fireships arrived to reinforce it, but despite their assistance, the Formidable was ultimately sunk by the Morrigan.[2]

As the rest of the British fleet arrived, it easily destroyed what remained of the French armada. The French were thus forced to abandon their plans to invade Scotland, and the battle was a decisive British victory.[2]
