"During the following years, my scout often reported people being brutally murdered all over Tuscany. Villagers were talking about men clad in black-feathered armor appearing from nowhere; killing peasants and common folk just for sport. To be honest, I never paid too much attention to those rumors. I later realized how big of a mistake it was to ignore them."

The Battle of Forlì was a military conflict fought between the Templar forces of Rodrigo Borgia, commanded by the Orsi brothers, and troops of Caterina Sforza, Countess of Forlì, supported by Assassins during the year 1488.

Shelter in the Wetlands

Planning the protection

"It took me months to recover from the events that occurred in Roma. Sirus' attempt to take down the Borgia was a bold and foolish attempt. The madness of his mind blinded his judgment, power took over his thoughts and pushed many to their deaths. I just wonder why his people were so loyal to him."
―Niccolò Machiavelli wrote in his journal.[src]

After the death of Sirus Favero, the leader of the counter-Assassins group Crows in Rome.[1] Niccolò Machiavelli sends his spies all over Italy, if there's a new incident happens, he can bring his brothers to help.[2]

One day, one of Niccolò Machiavelli's spies in Forlì had sent a letter to him. The spy reported that the citizens were exposed to a series of ruthless murders. The victim's corpses were then left abandoned in the muddy fields on the outskirts of the city. According to his report, these corpses were left by The Crows. Read of this, Machiavelli started shaking his hands, he doesn't want to remember the fear of the Crows. At this moment, Ezio knock his door.[2]

Ezio, Mario Auditore and Niccolò Machiavelli met with the inventor Leonardo da Vinci, with the hope that he might be able to shed some light upon the nature of the artifact.[3][2]

Leonardo, fascinated by the Apple, explained he knew little more of it than the Assassins themselves. He derived that it was fabricated with materials that shouldn't exist, and yet was an ancient artifact. Mario then claimed that the Codex referred to it as a "Piece of Eden". Ezio then interrupted, stating that Rodrigo referred to it as "the Apple".[3]

Leonardo then speculated that this might be referring to Adam and Eve's Apple, of forbidden knowledge. Leonardo asked Ezio if he was suggesting they were connected. Neither confirming nor denying this, Ezio touched the Apple.[3]

The Apple immediately reacted with his DNA and cause the entire room to be filled with a blinding light, and images of the future. Causing confusion and pain to everyone except for Leonardo, Ezio stopped it once more with the touch of his hand.[3]

After inadvertently witnessing the Apple's power, Leonardo proclaimed that if the artifact fell into the wrong hands, the results could prove evidently disastrous. Mario, however, knew it had to be protected.[3]

He thought it best to hide the Piece of Eden within the city of Forlì, where a powerful ally of the Assassins reigned; Caterina Sforza, an old acquaintance of Ezio. Informing Ezio of this plan, he explained the city was walled and protected by cannons. Ezio expressed his joy with this plan, and prepared to depart for Forlì.[3]

Machiavelli told Ezio, he will leave immediately to prepare for his arrival. Before he left, he sent a bird with a message to his spy and Lo Sparviero to meet him outside the Forlì at dusk. He decided that before he meet with Lady Sforza, he will deal with the problem of the murders first.[2]

Arriving in Forlì

"Caterina welcomed me and we had a long walk together. I decided not to inform her of the events I've learned about. I had to investigate myself before alarming her."
―Niccolò Machiavelli wrote in his journal.[src]

Machiavelli arrived with Lo Sparviero to meet the spy outside the city. They just met and ambushed by a couple of Crows. Lo Sparviero successfully cleared the attackers and the other reinforcements came from one of them yelled with his last breath.[4] The spy told Machiavelli that Caterina was waiting for him inside the city. And, obviously the city was infiltrated by the Crows.[2]

While Machiavelli set out to meet Caterina, Lo Sparviero entered the city to track down the remaing Crows. He followed a Crow who was very suspicious and stopped multiple times to make sure he was not followed. The first sign of trouble came when the Crow halted for a second to exchange glances with a group of Borgia Guards in front of the Rocca di Ravaldino. Lo Sparviero decided to keep following the Crow though his senses told him that something is not right.[4]

The Crow met with his brothers and after all of them turned their head towards the end of the street, it was clear to Lo Sparviero that they knew of his presence. The Crows decided to take different streets in order to confuse the Assassin, but he cleverly hunted down all of them. At the same time, Lo Sparviero found Caterina's handmaiden to warning her about the danger of the city. After that, Lo Sparviero send a message to Machiavelli that he eliminated all of the Crows in the city and the Borgia Soldiers captured many of his spies and they're being interrogated.[4]

Before Machiavelli received the message, Ezio finally arrived to meet Machiavelli and Caterina outside the city.[2]

Escort to the conflict

"Whilst I was worrying about the Assassin and his mission, Ezio had arrived and together with Caterina we returned to the city. We were about half way to the gates when several waves of citizens came running towards us in panic. Caterina stepped in front of a woman and asked her what happened. She inform Caterina that the city was under Borgia attack. I cursed myself for not telling them of this menace before. It was my fault... or was it?"
―Niccolò Machiavelli wrote in his journal.[src]

Accompanied by Machiavelli, Ezio met up with Caterina, who was surprised to hear of Ezio's allegiances to the Assassins, even claiming she knew there was something special about him when they first met. Escorted by the city guards, Caterina, Machiavelli and Ezio made their way to the city. As they did, Caterina claiming that the Apple would be safe in Forlì.[3]

As they walked Ezio complimented Caterina on ruling her own city, remarking it was very impressive. Caterina agreed, but reminded him it was once her husband, before he passed away. Ezio offered his condolences, however Caterina simply told not to, as she had him killed.[3]

Surprised by this, Machiavelli explained that Girolamo was affiliated with the Templars, and was making a map on the remaining codex pages. Caterina then expressed her loathing for her ex-husband, pointing out various flaws. As they made their way towards the city however, they found the townspeople fleeing from an unknown hostile force.[3]

When Caterina asked one of the fleeing civilians who was attacking, she was given the names Checco and Ludovico Orsi, the men she had hired to kill her husband. They had invaded and taken control of much of the city.[3] Heard of this, Machiavelli cursed himself for not telling them of this menace before.[2]

Fearing the worst for her children, the party made their way to the city with haste, but was blocked from entry, for the city gates were locked. Ezio asked if there was another way into the city, and Caterina replied that there was a secret entrance.[3]

She instructed Ezio to swim under the city drain and open the gates once he got inside. As he made his way into the city, Caterina threw insults at the Orsi brothers, shouting and screaming at them with vulgar taunts.[3]

After making his way through the city, avoiding open conflict, Ezio managed to scale the walls, and dispatch any Borgia invaders that challenged him, and eventually opened the gates for Caterina and her bodyguards, allowing them to retake the city.[3]

Defending the Citadel

Open battle

"Reinforcements from the mountains! They are breaching the citadel!"
―One of Caterina's guard screaming of the Orsi's reinforcements, 1488.[src]

Ezio, opening the gates with Machiavelli and Caterina, made their way to the citadel. Ezio then performed a leap of faith to join the skirmish. There they fought off the Templars attacking. Though several times they were ambushed Ezio and Machiavelli both managed to protect Caterina. As they reached the inner citadel, Caterina went on to check on her children.[3]

She noticed that two of her children, Ottaviano and Bianca were missing. The servant informed her that the two were playing outside during the attack, and feared the worst. Before Caterina spoke, a guard posted on the city walls bellowed that the Orsi were bringing reinforcement from the mountains, and are breaching the citadel.[3]

Defensive

"Caterina! Caterina Sforza! I know you're in there! I have something you may want back! Are you missing any children?"
―Checco Orsi calling out to Caterina.[src]

Caterina told Ezio to stop them from breaching the citadel. Preparing for combat, Ezio, Caterina and Machiavelli fought off the invaders as they made their way into the citadel. After fending off most of the attackers, Caterina heard some very familiar voices.[3]

Looking outside the citadel, Caterina saw it was the Orsi brothers, accompanied by their infantry of Borgia soldiers. Checco then claimed that he had something she may want back, informing her that the children were with them. The two were also surprised to see Ezio, and introduced themselves to the Assassin.[3]

Caterina insulted them and demanded her children be released, and the Orsi brothers claimed that they would be freed once Caterina handed over her husband's map. During this exchange, an unknown monk watched from the back of the Orsi's armed band.[3]

Caterina refused to surrender the map, and even went as far as to say that the Orsi can have her children, stating that she has "the instrument to make more". Knowing that Caterina would inevitably change her mind, the Orsi brothers claimed that she had one hour before they killed them. After this, the brothers and their men retreated to the countryside.[3]

Caterina cried out of concern for her children. Ezio told Caterina that he couldn't let her make that sacrifice, and Caterina replied that there would be no sacrifices and asked Ezio get them back for her. Ezio agreed and gave Caterina the Apple of Eden, stating that it needed to remain safe in the citadel. He then departed to rescue her children.[3]

Machiavelli retrieved the message send by Lo Sparviero. He learned the most of his spies has been captured by the Borgia soldiers. And he tasked the murderer of Crow to save his spies. Then Machiavelli told Sforza that he will climb to the highest tower of the Rocca to look for their friends.[2]

Once he on the top, he tried to find the murderer in the city. The only he saw was the Borgia forces were gathering up the citizens and there was chaos everywhere. While he was looking the view of the city, the Borgia archer shot his armor from outside the city that cause him to fall down in the moat and been captured.[2]

The murderer using his skills to free the most of spies when the Borgia forces were patrolling every street.[4]

Counter

Distraction

"The Maestro gains his prize, because of me..."
―Ludovico Orsi's last words after Ezio slays him.[src]

With two of Sforza's children still in Orsi hands, Ezio was tasked with their liberation. The Assassin overpowered the guard detail assigned to imprison Bianca, who directed Ezio to her brother Ottaviano.[3]

As Bianca fled back to the city, Ezio made his way the lighthouse upon which Ottaviano was being held by Ludovico himself. Climbing the tower, Ezio dispatched Ludovico and rescued Ottaviano, though not before learning that the distraction of the captured siblings had allowed the brothers to steal the Apple.[3]

Rescuing for Machiavelli

"The Borgia Soldier was not aware that I was an Assassin. He believed that I might be a member of the Sforza family. He seemed to be interested in some kind of hidden vault that was apparently somewhere underneath the city of Forlì. I tried to explain to him that I have no knowledge of such a place, but he kicked me in the face. I hope the Assassin(Lo Sparviero) will find me soon..."
―Niccolò Machiavelli wrote in his journal.[src]

Machiavelli felt ashamed of being captured by the Borgia soldiers. He's been dragged to the church outside the city. The soldiers believed Machiavelli was a member of the Sforza family, not aware that he was an Assassin. One of the Machiavelli's spies saw he's being interrogated and tortured for the hidden vault, and ran to contacted Ezio and Lo Sparviero to save Machiavelli.[2]

After meeting each other, Lo Sparviero hurried to the gates of the city where Ezio lured away several Borgia Guards guarding the perimeter. Lo Sparviero then sneaked into the church and rescued Machiavelli.[4] They couldn't return to the city, but Lo Sparviero told Machiavelli that Ezio was waiting for them at the old lighthouse.[2]

They had to fight their way through the Borgia forces but eventually, they made it to the lighthouse and met with Ezio.[4] Machiavelli told Ezio everything he could and the latter reassured the former of his trust.[2] Ezio instructed Lo Sparviero to escort Machiavelli back to the Rocca. Although the siege is ongoing, but Machiavelli felt satisfied that they successfully eliminated The Crows and he hope he will never have to see them again.[2]

Chasing for the apple

Machiavelli: "As soon as you left, they attacked again. Checco Orsi - he has the Apple!"
Ezio: "WHAT!? No! Where is he!?"
Machiavelli: "We chased him out here. But the bastard's escaped to the mountains--"
Ezio: "I'm going!"
—Machiavelli told Ezio that the Apple has been taken, 1488.[src]

Hurrying back to the citadel, Ezio learned that Ludovico's jeering had been true, and that Checco had acquired the Apple; Ezio swiftly tracked down and killed him.

Retrieving the Apple, Ezio failed to notice that Checco had stabbed him in the abdomen. Injured, Ezio collapsed to the floor, the Apple rolling from his hand.[3]

Before losing consciousness Ezio saw a monk with a missing finger pick up the Apple and walk away, despite Ezio's warnings against doing so. The battle was over, and the city remained under the control of Caterina Sforza.[3]

The hunt for the monk

Woken in a daze

"He wore a black robe. Like a monk... And I think... a missing finger? Sì! Caterina, I have to go - right away!"
―Ezio after waking up.[src]

In the battle's aftermath, Forlì guards scouting the area found Ezio, barely alive. They brought him back to the city, where Caterina personally nursed him back to health.[3]

When Ezio regained consciousness, he told her what had happened, and she suggested that he head for an abbey in the wetlands where he might find some clues to the monk's identity, and also gave Ezio the map, since he would need to find it to find the remaining Codex pages in order to determine the location of the Vault. With that, Ezio thanked Caterina for her help, and departed.[3]
