Naoe and Yasuke arrived at the shrine south of Himeji and explore the surrounding. They observed a particular miko who was alone unlike the others who were in groups.
Yasuke:This miko does not carry herself like the others.
Yasuke approached the miko.
Suspicious Miko:The dead are always ready to speak to us. We must be ready to listen in return. Are you ready, seeker?
Yasuke took out the fortune he received from Tokubei.
Yasuke:I was hoping you could tell me what this fortune says.
Shinobi:Who gave you that? It doesn't belong to you! You shouldn't be here.
The "miko" revealed herself as a kunoichi and attacked Yasuke.
Shinobi:You will not interfere with the master's wishes!
Yasuke killed the kunoichi and looted a letter from her body.
Shinobi's Orders
Our special guest is attracting unwelcome attention. Itatehyozu Shrine is no longer safe for him. Pick a safe spot and move him there at the earliest opportunity. Do not share this location with anyone. I will contact you again when the master requires it. As always, any injury to our master's guest will be visited tenfold upon those responsible.
Having gained a new lead, Naoe and Yasuke traveled to Itatehyōzu Shrine situated southeast of the city. Inside the shrine, they eavesdropped on a group of miko servants.
Servant 1:I hear the master will be here in person.
Servant 2:Our guest is of great value to the master. I assume he wants to attend to the guest himself.
After turning to a corner, they found the young Ukita Hideie praying in front of a shrine.
Yasuke:It is the young lord! He looks injured.
Ukita Hideie:Good health. For all those we care about.
Yasuke:Young lord. Are you hurt? Who did this to you?
Ukita Hideie:Oh! It's you! It hurts, but it is getting better. Such chaos and confusion at the rengakai. I thought those rōnin were going to kill me to get back at my father. But they brought me here.
Yasuke:I spoke with your father at the rengakai.
Ukita Hideie:You did! May I ask... what was his stanza about?
Yasuke:Regret.
Ukita Hideie:I had prepared a stanza for him. It was a message for the both of us. Something must be weighing on my father's mind. I hope he is all right.
Yasuke:Young lord, we should get going.
Ukita Hideie:Of course.
Yasuke escorted the young lord.
Yasuke:You seem quite at ease in this place.
Ukita Hideie:Many shrines and temples were damaged in the fighting. My father contributed to their reconstruction. A way to help the people make sense of their suffering.
Yasuke:That was a kind thing to do.
Ukita Hideie:He had a hard childhood. I don't think he had anyone caring for him back then. That is why I obeyed when he sent me to Lords Hideyoshi and Kanbei. My way of caring for him in return.
The two stopped before a priest.
Shinto Priest:Oh! Have you come to take our young lord away? Such a pity. We are quite fond of him.
Yasuke:Do you not find it odd that you are asked to hide the son of a daimyō?
Shinto Priest:It is not for me question such things. I am but a humble servant. As you are, I am sure.
Yasuke:Hmm.
Shinto Priest:Good day, then. Until our paths cross again.
Yasuke and Hideie continued their way.
Yasuke:So, you serve both Lord Hideyoshi and the Ukita clan now?
Ukita Hideie:I suppose that's true. I am bound to Lord Hideyoshi's service, but he and Lord Kanbei must care for me in return. All this attention just for me. I will prove myself worthy of their protection.
Servant:Hello, young lord.
As they reached a big tree in the middle of the courtyard, they found Ukita Naoe and his guards. Hideie, after seeing his father, immediately ran to him.
Ukita Hideie:Father!
Yasuke followed behind.
Ukita Hideie:Father. It is good to see you again. Have you come to take me to Himeji?
For a moment, Naoie said nothing.
Ukita Naoie:You must go with my men to Okayama. I cannot take you to Himeji Castle.
Ukita Hideie:In Bizen? But... are you disappointed in me, father? Did I do something wrong?
Ukita Naoie:Of course not. Please. Just go with them.
Having little choice, Hideie obeyed and left with the servant.
Yasuke:Lord Naoie. You have impeccable timing.
Ukita Naoie:Yes. We both do.
Yasuke:Why are you here?
Ukita Naoie:For my son, of course. One of the servants told my men he was spotted in the shrine.
Yasuke:My lord. Why will you not let your son return to Himeji Castle?
Ukita Naoie:This is no concern your yours.
Yasuke:You did not seem relieved to see him. Not even a smile.
Ukita Naoie:My son is Ukita. He understands that even a smile can be turned into a weapon against me.
Yasuke:And you expect Lord Hideie will make it back to Okayama Castle without intereference?
'Ukita Naoie:Enough of this badgering. Does Lord Kanbei know you're here?
At that moment, Yasuke sensed the surrounding miko and priests paying close attention to their conversation.
Yasuke:He does not.
Ukita Naoie:Lord Mitsuhide said he sent you away after Honnoji. I didn't expect to see you again at Himeji Castle.
Yasuke:So it is you. The weapons stockpiled in the temple. The men inside Himeji Castle. You are planning another attack. But why capture your own son during the rengakai? He was almost killed.
Ukita Naoie:I hid him to keep him safe until my business was completed. But you complicated things. I cannot have what I want as long as Hashiba Hideyoshi and Kuroda Kanbei both live. And you.
Yasuke:You will not succeed. I will make sure of it.
Naoie lifted his hand, which signaled the nearby shrine maidens and priests to gather, revealing they were Naoie's shinobi in disguise. They took out a dagger and surrounded Yasuke.
Ukita Naoie:Goodbye now.
As Naoie took his leave, his ninja attacked Yasuke. Despite their number superiority, they were eliminated by the samurai.
Naoe and Yasuke traced a note to Junisho Shrine which ultimately allowed them to find the young Hideie in another shrine. They met Hideie's father Naoie, who sent his son back to Bizen and revealed himself as the one responsible for the attack on Himeji Castle. With his identity uncovered, Naoie failed in his attempt to eliminate Naoe and Yasuke with his shinobi.
