Paulino Massa was an Italian Jesuit priest and a Templar who lived in Japan during the late Sengoku period.
Biography
In 1560, Paulino Massa established a relationship with daimyō Imagawa Ujizane and recruited him into the Templar Order.[1] He then promised to take charge on their plans against the Oda clan and his vassal Matsudaira Motoyasu.[2] In the next year, Massa and Ujizane then detained Matsudaira's wife Sena and their children Nobuyasu and Kamehime at Ujizane's mansion to leverage power over Matsudaira.[1]
However, their initial plans to infiltrate Iga and to find the location of the Imperial Regalia failed, as the shinobi led by Toza were all killed, while the rōnin Kuroiwa Gonjou-rou survived.[2] However, he and Ujizane soon understood that Motoyasu would send a rescue party for his family, especially the one who was in Iga and whose family is loyal to his clan.[3]
In 1562, with his prediction true, Massa waited at Kaminogō Castle for the arrival of the last hostage. When Ujizane's retainer Udono Nagateru arrived with Sena, he soon caught sight of the Igan shinobi Hattori Hanzō just right after him. Massa then threw a knife at Hanzō's shuriken, which was aimed at Nagateru. Introducing himself, Massa was met with opposition from Nagateru who did not want his presence here at the castle. Insulted, Massa then dismissed Nagateru and then shot the retainer point-blank dead. With his pistol, he aimed his gun towards Sena and her children while offering a choice to Hanzō. He soon demanded for the location of the Imperial Regalia in exchange for Motoyasu's family.[4]
However, before Hanzō could respond, Sena held a tantō to her neck, offering her compliance for her kids' lives. Massa agreed and offered the choice of either taking the kids or telling him about the Regalia for all of their lives. Reluctant, Hanzō saved her kids while the castle became unstable and started to collapse around them. Afterwards, Massa took Sena from the castle and found themselves at a watchtower nearby. There, he admitted that he never met any harm to her and her family and intended to use her as a bargaining chip for Motoyasu to join his cause. Upset, Sena soon looked above her and saw that Hanzō arrived and came back for her.[5]
