The Siege on Kaminogō Castle took place at Kaminogō Castle, Japan in 1562 during the late Sengoku period. It was fought between the Matsudaira clan led by daimyō Matsudaira Motoyasu and the Imagawa clan. The former was aided by both Hattori Yasunaga, who led his faction, while his son and shinobi Hattori Hanzō was secretly tasked with the rescue of Motoyasu's family. The latter was reinforced by the Udono clan, led by its member and Imagawa retainer Udono Nagateru.

The battle ended with the Matsudaira clan being victorious, taking control of the castle and expanding their influence over Mikawa. Hanzō also successfully rescued Motoyasu's family from the grasp of Nagateru and the Jesuit priest and Templar Paulino Massa, who worked covertly aiding the Imagawa clan's attempted resurgence.

Prelude

In 1561, Imagawa Ujizane joined the Templar Order after being recruited by Jesuit priest Paulino Massa, who aided in his attempt to resurge his clan's standing. As a result, they detained Matsudaira Motoyasu's wife Sena and his children, Nobuyasu and Kamehime.[1] With his family captive, Motoyasu tasked his retainer Watanabe Moritsuna to find another man to embark on a secret mission.[2] Fortunately, Moritsuna found fellow retainer Hattori Hanzō, who just returned back to his home region Mikawa.[3]

In 1562, Hanzō and Moritsuna enacted their mission, where Hanzō solely investigated the Imagawa Mansion, and looked for Sena and the children.[4] While investigating the mansion,[5] he found help from a wayward soldier Amano Kageyasu. While led around the grounds, Hanzō soon came across a dead body that he believed was Sena.[6] Being noticed, Hanzō and Kageyasu escaped Ujizane's men and met with Moritsuna about their next steps. Surprisingly, they soon saw Imagawa retainer Udono Nagateru riding to Kaminogō Castle with Sena captive. With this revelation, Hanzō told Moritsuna and Kageyasu to go to Motoyasu while he left to rescue Sena and her children alone.[7]

The siege

With his family gone for nearly a year, Motoyasu assembled his army and planned to attack the Imagawa clan at Kaminogō Castle. However, he still hoped for his family's safe return.[6] He later attacked the castle and fought against the Udono clan. While fighting, he had his men lay fire onto the castle. Meanwhile, within the tenshu, Udono had Sena and the kids guarded until Hanzō arrived and nearly killed him. However, Paulino Massa saved Nagateru while he introduced himself. When Nagateru insulted him for his presence, Massa responded by outright killing him before setting his gun towards Sena. He later offered a choice to Hanzō: the lives of Motoyasu's family for the location of the Imperial Regalia.[8]

Before Hanzō can respond, Sena took out a tantō and warned Massa that she will kill herself unless he spares the lives of her children. In agreement, Massa offered a new deal: save the kids or save them all for the location of the Imperial Regalia. With the siege raging on, Hanzō escaped with the children while Massa left the castle with Sena. Hanzō managed to secure the kids' safety before turning back to save Sena. At a watchtower, Massa and Sena watched as the battle was ending before he revealed to use her to sway Takechiyo to his side. Yet, Hanzō arrived[9] and checked in on Sena. Before Massa could react, Hanzō striked him down and then rushed Sena back to Takechiyo.[10]

Aftermath

Hanzō successfully reunited Takechiyo back with his family while his forces proved victorious against the Imagawa clan and took control of the castle. The next day, Takechiyo spoke with Moritsuna and Hanzō, whom he congratulated and thanked for his family's return. Offering Hanzō a place besides him, the shinobi was grateful for the offer but told him that he must return to Iga for his other responsibilites.[10]
