The Assault on Burgh Castle was an assault in 873 undertook by an allied coalition of East Anglian militia and Vikings against a clan of Vikings led by the chieftain Rued.
The allied coalition launched an assault from the North Sea, laying siege to the eastern wall of the castle. In the final moments of the battle, Eivor Varinsdottir fought and defeated Rued in a duel, while thegn Oswald, thought to have died at Dunwic, was rescued.[1]
