The clan's symbol

Rued's clan was a clan of Vikings led by the jarl Rued. Originating from Geatland in what is now Sweden, the clan migrated to England during the period of Viking incursions into Great Britain during the 9th century.

The clan settled in the lands of East Anglia, and launched raids and attacks against the Anglo-Saxons and the Norse alike, leaving paths of destruction in their wake.

History[edit | edit source]

Rued's clan originated from Geatland which, like other regions in Scandinavia, were consisted of numerous petty kingdoms.[1] At some point in the 860s, Rued married the shieldmaiden Valdis, who was a cousin of Halfdan Ragnarsson, suggesting a possible tie between both clans. However, the marriage fell apart and Valdis fled to England with her brothers Broder and Brothir to escape from Rued. A few years later, Rued also led his clan to migrate and settle in England.[2]

Arriving in the Kingdom of East Anglia, the clan quickly gained controlled of numerous strongholds such as Dunwic and Burgh Castle, which they used to launch incursions inland. Over the next few years, the clan led raids against the towns of Northwic and Thetford, as well as attacks into Ledecestrescire,[3] where they attacked the settlement of Ravensthorpe, founded by the Norse Raven Clan.[1]
