Controversy

Following the release of the second chapter of the three-part DLC Legacy of the First Blade, entitled Shadow Heritage, the DLC drew criticism from the LGBT+ community for a developer decision and the corresponding achievement. As first reported on the Assassin's Creed board on Reddit, the episode concluded with a cut-scene revealing that the protagonist had entered into a heterosexual relationship and had a child, regardless of whether players had been invested in the romance or not.[1]

Fans took to social media and other boards to express their dissatisfaction at the story development,[2] condemning Ubisoft for promoting a game where player agency could define the protagonist's sexuality—a decision for which the company had received loud acclaim[3][4]—only to take that control away and force the protagonist to "embrace domesticity, a heterosexual relationship, and [parent]hood", all elements of traditionally hetero-normative society.[5]

In light of the furor, many drew attention to a seemingly contradictory quote by Creative Director Jonathan Dumont in his October 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly:

"Since the story is choice-driven, we never force players in romantic situations they might not be comfortable with. Players decide if they want to engage with characters romantically. I think this allows everybody to build the relationships they want, which I feel respects everybody's roleplay style and desires."
―Jonathan Dumont[3]

Further issue was taken over the wording of the achievement unlocked at the cut-scene, titled Growing Up and with "Start a family" as its description.[6][7] The next day,[8] Dumont released a statement on the Ubisoft boards apologizing to players.[9] On January 24,[10] Ubisoft informed players that a patch changing some dialogue and cut-scenes was imminent and being tested to ensure it would be reflected in the DLC's final chapter.[11]On February 15, a full month after Shadow Heritage's release, AccessTheAnimus reported that the trophy and its description had since been changed.[12]

Trivia

  • The achievement This is Sparta! is a reference to the line from the movie 300 said by King Leonidas I before kicking a Persian messenger down a well. It eventually became popular online up to the point where it became an internet meme.
  • The achievement Are You Not Entertained? is a reference to the line from the movie Gladiator said by Maximus Decimus Meridius after swiftly and methodically defeating his opponents in an arena, disappointing the gathered audience that had hoped for a bloody drawn-out match.
  • The achievement The Argonauts is a reference to the group of heroes who sailed with Jason on his quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece, a mythical object that was a Piece of Eden known as the Shroud.
  • The achievement Trust Me, I'm a Doctor is a reference to the 1996 BBC documentary television series of the same name.
  • The achievement Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is a reference to the Daft Punk song of the same name.
  • The achievement I Have the Power is a reference to the classic line by the character He-Man from the 1983 animated television series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
  • The icon for the achievement Wrath of the Amazons is a visual reference to the woman from J. Howard Miller's World War II poster "We Can Do It!" who is colloquially referred to as "Rosie the Riveter". In truth, she was unnamed in the original work and was based off Naomi Parker's likeness, with her naming by the public as "Rosie" not becoming mainstream until the 1980s.
  • The icon for the achievement Kingmaker is a visual reference to the weapon known as the "King's Sword" from the 2005 game Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. Once wielded by the King of Persia, it was acquired by the Prince after the mysterious death of his father.
