The Great Recoinage of 1696 was an attempt by the English Government under King William III to replace the hammered silver that made up most of the coinage in circulation, much of it being clipped and badly worn.
This period saw the rise of many counterfeiters as forged silver coins became increasingly common. As a result, William Lowndes, the Secretary to the Treasury of Great Britain and a member of the Assassin Order sought out the warden of the Royal Mint, Isaac Newton for help through his fellow Assassin Omar Khaled.
