The Trienio Liberal was a period of three years from 1820 to 1823, during which a liberal government ruled Spain. This period began after a military uprising in 1820 forced King Ferdinand VII to end absolutism and restore the 1812 Constitution, and ended in 1823 when the French king Louis XVIII ordered his army to intervene and help reinstate Ferdinand's absolute power.[1]
