The first clash was in the town of Lexington, also known as "The Shot Heard 'Round The World". Here Patriot leader John Parker and about eighty militia fought against six companies of British Marines led by John Pitcairn. After a short engagement, the British marched on to Concord. Revere, Dawes, and Samuel Prescott, rode to alert the militia in Concord. About half way, Revere was captured, and Dawes escaped back to Lexington while Prescott kept going on to Concord.
After the British searched Concord for weapons to no avail, they were turned back by James Barrett and his force at the Old North Bridge. The Patriots followed, inflicting major losses along the road back to Boston. The Patriots, while defeated at Lexington, had won the first engagement of the Revolutionary War.
