The War of the League of Cambrai was a conflict fought as part of the Italian Wars from 1508 to 1516. It involved a number of Western European powers during the Renaissance, including the Papal States, the Republic of Venice, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Kingdoms of France and Spain.

Intending to curb the influence of Venice in northern Italy, Pope Julius II created the League of Cambrai, an anti-Venetian alliance that also included Louis XII of France, Ferdinand II of Aragon, and Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. The League was met with initial success in its military campaigns against Venice and its allies, though by 1510 the alliance would collapse due to the friction between Julius and Louis.[1]

During the war, several fortifications were raised around and inside Rome. A detachment of the Papal Army was sent to build a camp around the Colosseum in order to protect the southern part of the city and the ruins.[2]

In 1512, the Holy League managed to drive the French out of Italy, but the French would regain territory three years later, bringing the war to a close in 1516.[1]
