The Flight to Varennes was an episode of the French Revolution in the summer of 1791, in which the French royal family attempted to escape from Paris in order to initiate a counter-revolution but were arrested at the small town of Varennes and escorted back to Paris.
History[edit | edit source]
In the spring of 1789, Marie Antoinette encouraged King Louis XVI towards policy considered faltering and contradictory, believing that only foreign intervention would be the salvation of the crown as revolts heated up.[1]
On October 6 of the same year, ten thousand people gathered at the Palace of Versailles, demanding the royal family be brought to Paris,[2] which they were the following day.[3] When Louis appeared to be unable to act, Marie instead met with advisors and ambassadors, begging for aid from other European monarchs.[2] Louis ignored his advisors and refused to abdicate,[3] while Marie refused the support of La Fayette and Mirabeau.[1] Marie pressed on with the plan for the escape, which her husband agreed with.[3][4]
In summer of 1791, Louis approved the plan to secretly flee from Paris to the supposedly loyal troops in the east.[4] They escaped only as far as the small town of Varennes, where they were arrested after having been recognized at their previous stop in Sainte-Menehould.[5] After the capture of the entire royal family at Varennes,[1][4] they were escorted back to Paris.[3][6] Upon their return, Georges Danton called for the king's death, before retracting to merely call for his abdication.[6]
Suspicions of treason led to the capture of the Tuileries Palace on 10 August 1792. On November of that year, evidence was discovered that proved suspicions of treason on Louis' part to be correct.[3]
