The First Crusade (1096 – 1099) was the first of a series of religious wars with the objective of recovering the Holy Land from Islamic rule.[1]

Plans for the invasion began in 1095, when Pope Urban II[2] rallied European allies during the Council of Clermont. The four main armies left for the front in August 1096, arriving at Jerusalem three years later to find that the Egyptian Fatimids had been occupying the city since August 1098. On 7 June 1099, the Christian army camped outside Jerusalem and laid siege. The city quickly fell and once the Crusaders entered the city, they massacred its Muslim and Jewish populations.[3][4]
