The Battle of Philippi was the final battle in the Liberators' civil war following the assassination of Gaius Julius Caesar. It was fought between the alliance of Marcus Antonius and Octavian, and the instigators of Caesar's murder, the Roman Hidden Ones Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus.
Background[edit | edit source]
On 15 March 44 BCE, the Hidden Ones Aya, Brutus, and Cassius arrived at the Theatre of Pompey to eliminate Caesar, whom the Order of the Ancients had helped rise to power as dictator perpetuo. While Aya fought and killed Caesar's right-hand man Lucius Septimius, Brutus and Cassius distracted Caesar in the Curia filled with 40 of their allies from the Roman Senate. Following Caesar's murder,[2] his friend Antonius rallied Caesar's supporters and called for the assassins' elimination.[3]
The Hidden Ones were forced out of the city, with Brutus going to the Greek island of Krete on Aya's advice. However, they were unable to flee far, as a civil war arose between the assassins and the newly-formed alliance of Antonius and Octavian, Caesar's adopted son.[4]
Neither Hidden One returned to Rome, with both Cassius and Brutus[5] opting to commit suicide after being tracked down in Macedonia following their loss in Philippi,[4] though this did not stop Antonius or his allies from spreading the rumor that his forces had killed them.
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
Following Brutus' death, his fellow Hidden Ones gathered in Philippi and attempted to resurrect him with the Shroud of Eden, to no avail. Brutus only opened his eyes and moved without breathing, subsequently falling still in a seeming second death.[5][6] However, there were also rumors that Brutus had faked his death during the battle. This rumor reached Aya, who was by then better known as Amunet.[4]
