The Assault on Caustow Castle took place in 873 in the middle stages of the 9th century Viking expansion into England. It was fought between the forces of Sons of Ragnar and the Briton forces under King Rhodri the Great.
The assault[edit | edit source]
After evidence was found by the Sons of Ragnar's ally Eivor Varinsdottir of Ceolbert's death at the hands of the Britons, Ivarr gave cause to attack the Britons at Caustow Castle.[1] Travelling with Ivarr, they met his men outside the castle as they later initiated their assault. At the gate, Rhodri chastised Ivarr for their broken truce while Ragnarsson accused him of killing Ceolbert. Paying him no mind, Rhodri readied his men while Eivor, Ivarr, and their forces attacked the castle.[2]
Breaking through, the Vikings killed all the Briton soldiers while Ivarr and Eivor made their way into the throne room. Confronting Rhodri, Ivarr instigated a fight against the king. Despite his efforts, Rhodri fell unconsciousness after Ivarr knocked him out. Carrying Rhodri, Ivarr asked Eivor to accompany him away from the castle to view Rhodri's last moments.[2]
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
Traveling with Ivarr to Manstone Rock, Eivor reluctantly watched and stood by Ivarr, who performed a blood eagle on a wounded Rhodri. After killing Rhodri, Ivarr offered Eivor to kill him in one last glorious battle. She refused and was about to leave when Ivarr revealed that he had murdered Ceolbert to stage an attack on the Britons and cement his reputation as a "king killer". Angered, Eivor attacked and fought against Ivarr.[2]
After a lengthy duel, Eivor bested Ivarr, who asked her to send him to Valhalla. After deciding his fate, Eivor returned with Ivarr's corpse and told the truth to his brother Ubba Ragnarsson and Bishop Deorlaf. She also asked the bishop, who was the shire's new ealdorman, to tell Lady Angharad of Rhodri's unfounded death and that Ivarr had been punished for his actions. Despite the outcome, Eivor ultimately garnered an alliance with the shire and its ealdorman.[2]
