Imagawa Ujizane (今川 氏真, c. 1538 – 1615) was a Japanese daimyō of the Imagawa clan and a member of the Japanese Rite of the Templar Order during the Sengoku period. He is the son of Imagawa Yoshimoto.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1560, Imagawa Ujizane became the daimyō of his clan after the demise of his father Imagawa Yoshimoto at the orders of Oda Nobunaga.[2] From the start of his tenure, he was visited by Italian Jesuit priest Paulino Massa and became more of a frequent visitor as time went on. At some point, Massa revealed himself as a Templar and recruited Ujizane into the order.[3]
Planning together, Ujizane and Massa commissioned a group of shinobi led by their leader Toza and the rōnin Kuroiwa Gonjou-rou to travel to Iga and spy on Momochi Sandayu and his shinobi to discover the whereabouts of the Imperial Regalia.[4]
In 1561, Ujizane ordered the secret capture of Matsudaira Takechiyo's wife Sena and his children Nobuyasu and Kamehime to leverage control over Takechiyo.[3] After some time, he and Massa received notice that Toza and his shinobi subordinates died on their mission while Gonjou-rou lost his right arm but gave them information about closing on the whereabouts on the Regalia. With this, Massa told Ujizane that he will take charge of dealing with both Takechiyo and his newfound allies, the Oda clan.[4]
Within a year, Ujizane was at his mansion while he spotted Hattori Hanzō standing in front of a cage with a dead woman inside. Chastising the shinobi, he insulted his plans but was soon knocked down by his own guard Amano Kageyasu, who came back to aid Hanzō's efforts. While Hanzō and Kageyasu moved to find Sena and the children, Ujizane regained consciousness and rebuffed the traitor for betraying him. While Ujizane stood, Kageyasu and Hanzō left to find Watanabe Moritsuna before continuing their search for Takechiyo's family.[5]
