The attack on Daisen-ryō Kofun was a pre-meditated attack on the Daisen-ryō Kofun, which acted as an Assassin safehouse in 1569 during the late Sengoku period. It was fought between the Shinbakufu and the Kakushiba ikki. The former was financially supported by both the shōgun Ashikaga Yoshiaki and his allies, the Templars. The latter was led by their leader and Master Assassin Fujibayashi Tsuyu.

The attack ended with the Shinbakufu being victorious, acquiring two of the Imperial Regalia while nearly eliminating the Kakushiba ikki. However, Hattori Hanzō returned to aid Tsuyu, who successfully recovered the remaining Regalia, Jewel and gave her time and aid while she escaped the kofun.

Prelude[edit | edit source]

In 1569, samurai Hattori Hanzō accompanied his daimyō Tokugawa Ieyasu to a meeting at an Oda encampment in Kyoto. Within the meeting, they saw and met with Oda Nobunaga and shōgun Ashikaga Yoshiaki. There, Yoshiaki meets with Hanzō and learns about his time with the Igans. He later told the samurai about how he knows that the late Emperor Go-Nara entrusted the Imperial Regalia to the Igans. He later asked about their location to defend them himself. Stuck between his duties to Ieyasu and Nobunaga and his allies, Hanzō reluctantly revealed their location at the kofun near Sakai.[1]

Pleased, Yoshiaki told his ally the great news. His ally, Templar Nuno Caro, was immediately thankful for Hanzō's help. Realizing the Templar cross around his neck, Hanzō nearly unsheathed his yari but regressed upon further thought of how it may impact Ieyasu. With this betrayal, he immediately left for Iga and found Tsuyu and Nagato with their daughter Naoe. Nevertheless, he informed Tsuyu of the impending attack,[1] to which she garnered her league member to defend the kofun.[2]

The attack[edit | edit source]

Despite their full defense of the kofun, Tsuyu and her Kakushiba ikki suffered a huge loss, due to the mercenaries[1], known as the Shinbakufu, having had killed most of the league members.[3] In his last moments, Konan saw Hanzō arrive before succumbing to his wounds. In the attack, the Shinbakufu managed to obtain and steal two of the Regalia away. Within the pedestal room, Kuroiwa Gonjou-rou, along with two fellow Shinbakufu soldiers, saw the remaining Regalia, the Jewel, and took it. Hachi-rou, although bleeding out, tried to stop him but was ultimately cut down.[1]

Before Gonjou-rou could leave and complete the mission, Tsuyu surprised him and killed him, taking back the Jewel. Taking down one of the soldiers, Tsuyu dodged an arrow from the remaining soldier. Yet, the soldier was cut down by Hanzō, who gave Tsuyu time to escape with the Jewel. Meanwhile, Hanzō and Momochi Sandayu stayed to defeat the remaining Shinbakufu soldiers, leaving them the only survivors of the attack, along with Tsuyu.[1]

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

Tsuyu fortunately made her way back to Iga and met with Nagato with the Jewel in hand. Telling her that the league has fallen and two of the Regalia were taken, she tasked him to hide the Jewel and lie about her survival to everyone, including Naoe. Burdened, Nagato accepted the terms and wished her luck after promising that they will see each other again. Hanzō soon received a message about Tsuyu's apparent death, filling him with remorse. However, he refused to believe it and promised to protect Iga and find Tsuyu himself. Meanwhile, Nagato hid the Jewel in Mihata Kofun and also promised to protect Iga in honor of Tsuyu.[1][4]
