The Black Death was a bubonic plague pandemic from 1346 to 1353, affecting Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. It is the most fatal pandemic recorded in human history, resulting in the deaths of 75–200 million people.[1]

History

In 1348, the plague had visited the German city of Essen, wiping out nearly half the town's population. The Brothers of the Cross, a Templar Order front, traveled through the German countryside promising protection from the disease. The Assassin Lukas Zurburg suspected that they were after the Ankh, a Piece of Eden that purportedly could heal the sick and raise the dead, and was said to be lost somewhere in Central Europe. No explanation was ever recorded, but in 1350, the Brothers of the Cross suddenly disappeared, and Lukas was never seen again.[2]
