Plot
In the present day, after acquiring a sample of Basim's DNA, William Miles tasks one of his Assassins with reliving the former Hidden One's memories in the Animus. In a short monologue, William explains that, although he had his doubts about Basim at first and feared the wrong lessons might be learned from his life, he now understands that Basim has a great deal to teach the Assassins. With Basim located at the heart of the Assassin-Templar War, William believes he challenged the Creed in new ways and that the Assassins must do the same, as he fears there will soon be a time when they will all be tested.

During the 860s, Basim is a young thief living in Anbar with his childhood friend Nehal. For his entire life, Basim has been haunted by visions of a djinn, which Nehal had been helping him cope with. While a simple thief, Basim has greater aspirations and wishes to join his idols, the Hidden Ones, and become a protector of the people like them.

For his entire life, Basim has been haunted by visions of a djinn, which Nehal had been helping him cope with. While a simple thief, Basim has greater aspirations and wishes to join his idols, the Hidden Ones, and become a protector of the people like them.

In 861, Basim is given a chance to achieve his dream after meeting the Hidden One Roshan while completing a contract for his employer Dervis. However, Roshan refuses to recruit Basim into the Brotherhood, so he decides to impress her by stealing a chest sought by the Hidden Ones from the Caliph's Winter Palace. While breaking into the palace alongside Nehal, Basim witnesses the Caliph, al-Mutawakkil, being threatened by masked members of the Order of the Ancients, and discovers the chest's contents to be a Memory Seal, which activates in his hands.

After al-Mutawakkil confronts Basim and attempts to strangle him for stealing the artifact, Nehal comes to his rescue, killing the Caliph. Basim then escapes from the palace with the Memory Seal and is approached by Roshan the following day. She takes the artifact and invites Basim to flee Anbar with her, as the Caliphate guards are hunting him down in retaliation for al-Mutawakkil's murder. Basim refuses at first, but after discovering that the guards have executed most of his thief network, he angrily blames Nehal and flees the city with Roshan.

Over the following months, Basim is trained in the Hidden Ones' ways at their fortress of Alamut, under Roshan's guidance. After completing his initiation into the Brotherhood, Basim, along with Roshan, Fuladh Al Haami, and other Hidden Ones, is sent to Baghdad to continue an investigation into the Order of the Ancients' activities started by his friend Nur, who returned to Alamut after being attacked.

Once in Baghdad, Basim attempts to locate Ali ibn Muhammad, the Zanj Rebellion's leader and a Hidden One ally, who was captured by the Order's forces. In the process, he is reunited with Dervis and meets Beshi, Ali's second-in-command. After Basim rescues Ali from the Damascus Gate Prison, the rebel leader helps the Hidden Ones identify the soap mill owner Mas'ood Al-Ya'qoob as a member of the Order. Basim subsequently assassinates Mas'ood at a caravanserai where the Ancient was purchasing slaves for the Order's dig sites in the desert.

During this time, Basim reunites with Nehal, who informs him that she has been researching the artifacts sought by the Hidden Ones and the Order, which she inexplicably feels drawn to. Nehal also tells Basim about her doubts regarding the Hidden Ones' intentions, as she feels the Brotherhood is keeping secrets from Basim, and suggests that the solution to his visions of the djinn may lie with the Order. However, Basim refuses to listen to Nehal, feeling that his obligations to the Hidden Ones and the Creed come before his personal desires.

In time, Basim manages to eliminate the remaining Order members across Baghdad. In the Abbasiyah district, he discovers that the Order has infiltrated the House of Wisdom, where they are building a machine called the Alruh using scavenged Isu technology and are attempting to uncover the secrets of an ancient manuscript. Basim assassinates the Ancients Hassan, who oversaw the machine's construction, and Zahra, who abducted the scholar Hunayn ibn Ishaq to force him to translate the manuscript. He then identifies Fazil Fahim al-Kemsa as the Order leader in Abbasiyah and kills him during a symposium held at the House of Wisdom.

In Karkh, Basim, with the help of Roshan and his friend Kong, learns that the Order has organized a blockade at the harbor, confiscating all foreign wares in search of a rare hairpin. He subsequently assassinates the Ancients Javed, who oversaw the blockade, and Suhail, who raised the taxes for merchants in the Bazaar to earn money to finance the blockade. Following this, Basim attends Baghdad's annual grand auction, the Da'irat Al-mal, where he identifies the Chinese merchant Ning as the Order leader in Karkh and kills her.

In Sharqiyah, Basim assists the Zanj Rebellion after the Caliphate's Turkic mercenaries executed countless rebels in an attempt to draw Ali out. Traveling to Jarjaraya alongside Ali, Basim identifies and eliminates the captain carrying out the executions: Dogan bin Arslan. He then assassinates the Ancients that the captain answered to, Nadir ibn Havid and Jasoor ibn Basil, in the process uncovering the identity of the Order leader in Sharqiyah: Wasif al-Turki. While infiltrating the Great Garrison to eliminate Wasif and rescue captive Zanj rebels, Basim and Ali witness Wasif executing Beshi, leading to the Hidden One killing him in revenge.

With only the Ra's Al-Af'a of the Order left, Basim investigates the three possible candidates for the Order leader's identity: the poetess Arib Al-Ma'muniyya, Baghdad's governor Muhammad ibn Tahir, and the royal concubine Qabiha. His investigation reveals that the Order has made a deal with Muhammad to remove his Tahirid cousins' protection of Alamut, and that Qabiha is the head of the Order. Infiltrating the Caliphal Palace to assassinate her, Basim hesitates when Qabiha reveals that she is aware of his true nature and urges him to investigate an Isu temple underneath Alamut.

Roshan, who followed Basim, kills Qabiha and reprimands her apprentice for his disobedience, before trying to convince him to forget about the Isu temple and return to the Hidden Ones. However, Basim, now sharing Nehal's distrust of the Brotherhood, refuses and decides to travel to Alamut to uncover the truth about himself. After freeing the captive Hidden Ones, allowing them to repel the attack, Basim gains Mentor Rayhan's blessing to explore the Isu temple. However, he is confronted by Roshan, who tries to stop him from accessing the temple's secrets, forcing Basim to fight his former mentor. Basim has an internal struggle, realizing that he is Loki's incarnation, that Nehal was never real and was just a manifestation of the Isu's consciousness, and that his visions of the djinn were a representation of Loki's repressed traumatic memories. After overcoming the djinn, Basim decides to embrace Loki's memories and "fuses" his consciousness with Nehal's, becoming "whole" again. Following this, Basim is welcomed back by the Hidden Ones, which causes Roshan to resign in protest. As Basim meets with Rayhan to discuss what he has seen inside the temple, they both witness Roshan's departure from Alamut.

Assassin's Creed: Mirage is the thirteenth main installment in the Assassin's Creed series developed by Ubisoft. In the game, players take control of a younger version of Basim Ibn Ishaq, a central character from the 2020 video game Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, and explore his life during the 9th century in the Abbasid Caliphate's capital city of Baghdad.[1]

Gameplay

Set a decade prior to the events of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla,[2] players assume the role of Basim Ibn Ishaq with the gender choices, dialogue options, and relationship possibilities removed. After Valhalla had the raven Sýnin provide Eivor Varinsdottir with Eagle Vision despite being a corvid rather than an eagle, Mirage returns to the method used in Assassin's Creed: Origins (2017) and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (2018) by having the Eastern imperial eagle Enkidu aid Basim.[3]

The main location of the game is primarily the city of Baghdad, with minor parts of the game also set at the Alamut fortress,[4] but it is not explorable.[5] The Black Box missions from Assassin's Creed: Unity (2014), Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (2015), and the Valhalla downloadable expansion The Siege of Paris (2021) make a return, with Basim being able to explore the environment and find different ways to approach and eliminate his targets.[4] Another returning feature is the notoriety system that either assists or hinders Basim in his objectives.[6]

Basim has a variety of weapons and tools at his disposal, including smoke bombs, the Hidden Blade,[3] a blowpipe and darts, mines, throwing knives and noise makers.[7] The game does not feature a leveling and XP system like its predecessors, only tool improvement. To upgrade his tools, Basim will have to visit the triplet inventor brothers Abu Jafar Muhammad, Al-Hasan, or Ahmad at any of the Hidden Ones bureaus in Baghdad.[8] A skill tree allows the player to choose different effects for each of Basim's tools or weapons. A new mechanic, Assassin Focus, resembles the various enhanced abilities Kassandra had access to in Odyssey through the Spear of Leonidas and can be used to assassinate multiple enemies in rapid succession.[6]

During the game, Basim witnesses the prelude of the Zanj Rebellion, in which Baghdad's enslaved population rose up against the caliphate's Turkic Army forces.[5] The civilian crowd density echoes their appearance in Unity,[9] and although Basim's movements were done on the same engine as Valhalla,[5] they were built from scratch. Basim can move through crowds and traverse the city by freerunning in a similar fashion to Arno Dorian during the French Revolution seen in Unity.[9]

Unlike previous installments in the Assassin's Creed series, Mirage is the first story to not be interrupted by a modern day plot element, except for a framing device that bookends the start and end of the game.[10] Contracts that mark targets for assassination[5] and hiding places return, alongside optional challenges. Enemy archers can also shoot at Enkidu, canceling Eagle Vision.[4]

Synopsis

Official synopsis

In the ninth century CE, Baghdad is at its height, leading the world in science, art, innovation, and commerce. Amid its bustling urban landscape, a conflicted young orphan with a tragic past must navigate the streets to survive.

In Assassin's Creed® Mirage, you are Basim Ibn Ishaq, a cunning street thief with nightmarish visions, seeking answers and justice. After an act of deadly retribution, Basim flees Baghdad and joins an ancient organization—The Hidden Ones. As he learns their mysterious rituals and powerful tenets, he will hone his unique abilities, discover his true nature, and come to understand a new Creed—one that will change his fate in ways he never could have imagined.[11]

Basim confronted by the djinn in a nightmare

During the 860s, Basim is a young thief living in Anbar with his childhood friend Nehal. For his entire life, Basim has been haunted by visions of a djinn, which Nehal had been helping him cope with. While a simple thief, Basim has greater aspirations and wishes to join his idols, the Hidden Ones, and become a protector of the people like them.

Basim's initiation into the Hidden Ones

Fazil attempting to use the Alruh on Basim

He subsequently assassinates the Ancients Javed, who oversaw the blockade, and Suhail, who raised the taxes for merchants in the Bazaar to earn enough money to finance the blockade.

Qabiha telling Basim about the Isu temple under Alamut

With only the Ra's Al-Af'a of the Order left, Basim investigates the three possible candidates for the Order leader's identity: the poetess Arib Al-Ma'muniyya, Baghdad's governor Muhammad ibn Tahir, and the royal concubine Qabiha. His investigation reveals that the Order has made a deal with Muhammad to remove his Tahirid cousins' protection of Alamut, and that Qabiha is the head of the Order. Infiltrating the Caliphal Palace to assassinate her, Basim hesitates when Qabiha reveals that she is aware of his true nature and urges him to investigate an Isu temple under Alamut.

Joined by Nehal, he arrives in the midst of an attack by Tahirid forces and is knocked unconscious, but is saved by a mortally wounded Nur.

After defeating and incapacitating Roshan, Basim enters the temple alongside Nehal and discovers more Memory Seals locked away, as well as a cell where Loki was once imprisoned.

Basim and Rayhan watching Roshan depart Alamut

Sometime later, Basim recalls his previous life as Loki and the suffering inflicted upon him by the other Æsir. As his eagle companion Enkidu rejects him due to no longer recognizing him as the same person, Basim decides to seek out the other Isu incarnations like himself and muses that a "new world" awaits.

Development

On 9 February 2022, Basim's role as the protagonist of his own game codenamed "Assassin's Creed: Rift" was leaked to Jason Schreier and reported in Bloomberg News.[12] Basim's creator Darby McDevitt did not have any development role in it but acted as a character consultant.[3] Another working title revealed exactly one year and two weeks later was "Assassin's Creed: Dust", according to the pathnames of concept art by Xavier Minguell Solanes for the Hungarian studio Digic Pictures that he posted to the American art site ArtStation.[13] Rift was originally planned as another of Valhalla's many expansions,[12] but after Creative Director Stéphane Boudon had heard players' repeated requests for a more "character-driven story, focused on the [series'] core pillars" instead of the large RPG format,[14] it was extended into its own title first slated for release in late 2022 or early 2023.[12]

In mid-July, Schreier debunked an Aztec Empire setting rumor on Reddit by saying that Rift would be set in Baghdad[15] and revealed a week later that Ubisoft Bordeaux was the main developer, though its staff had fallen far behind schedule and requested more time. Rift was then pushed from a February 2023 release to sometime in spring.[16]

On 1 September,[17] the official title "Assassin's Creed: Mirage"—a name pitched by Ubisoft's Senior Manager for Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Malek Teffaha[18]—was leaked alongside art for a downloadable mini-quest called "The Forty Thieves" that promised to visit the infamous criminals of legend. Ubisoft quickly formally announced the game[17] and promised more details would come at the Ubisoft Forward event on 10 September.[19] On that day, Ubisoft released Mirage's official trailer with a developer analysis, and Teffaha proudly shared that it would have complete Arabic dubbing across all international copies,[20] noting that he knew Arabic localization was just as important to him[21] as it was to Arabic-speaking players,[22] and that he was inspired to push for it after hearing of people playing Sucker Punch Productions' Japan-based Ghost of Tsushima in Japanese.[23]

However, it encountered more delays in December and was rescheduled to be expected in August 2023,[24] but was delayed a third and final time in early May 2023, pushing the release to sometime in October.[25] This was later confirmed near month's end during Sony Interactive Entertainment's annual PlayStation Showcase event, during which Ubisoft released a gameplay trailer, gave a debut date of 12 October, and said more information was forthcoming during the Ubisoft Forward event in June.[26]

On 9 June, Ubisoft confirmed speculation that Mirage would include a visual filter to simulate the blue-grey color palette used throughout Assassin's Creed (2007).[27] Three days later, Ubisoft released eight minutes of Mirage gameplay with commentary from Boudon and Art Director Jean-Luc Sala.[28] Shortly afterward, a Ubisoft spokesperson revealed to the "Easy Allies" podcast team that Baghdad would be about as large as Constantinople in Assassin's Creed: Revelations (2011) or Paris in Unity.[29][30]

On 5 July, Ubisoft announced that the game's character lore database would also include a "History of Baghdad" mode detailing Baghdad's and the wider caliphate's culture with the help of museum partnerships. 66 research-focused entries would be divided across the topics of "Economy", "Belief and Daily Life", "Government", "Art and Science", and "Court Life". Dr. Raphaël Weyland from the Université de Montréal wrote all the entries and selected their feature images from collection catalogues given by The David Collection in Copenhagen, the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, Prof. Sir Nasser Khalili's private collection in London, and the Doris Duke Foundation's Shangri La Museum in Honolulu. Dr. Weyland did not work alone, being assisted by Dr. Glaire Anderson from the University of Edinburgh,[31] Dr. Vanessa Van Renterghem from the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales, and Dr. Ali Olomi from the University of California, Irvine.[32] Together, they answered many questions from the development team's weekly workshops about the era and worked to sort out the plethora of information into manageable partitions, with Dr. Weyland and World-Design Director Maxime Durand giving final say on what topics to cover and through which entries.[31]

A week later, Boudon, Sala, and Narrative Director Sarah Beaulieu hosted a joint AMA on Reddit. In it, they revealed that Mirage had a lower completion time more akin to the series' first games since its map was magnitudes smaller than Valhalla[33] and also because it would not have a downloadable expansion nor extensive post-launch material.[34] They also said the developer team was heavily inspired by British Iranologist Guy Le Strange's 1910 book Baghdad during the Abbasid Caliphate: From contemporary Arabic and Persian sources,[35] and promised Mirage would explain why Basim did not have an eagle in Valhalla,[36]

With Ubisoft having previously announced Photo Mode's surprise return before Valhalla's launch,[37] a fan asked if it would also be in Mirage, which Sala confirmed and added that it was also compatible with the Assassin's Creed-themed color filter,[38] though he also said that the similarly-acclaimed educational Discovery Tour was instead replaced with "History of Baghdad".[39] With "History of Baghdad" entries scattered in the open world rather than in a non-combat setting, players would have to plan their approaches just as carefully as in-game missions, as some were located in bandit territory, in secure areas protected by the caliphate's guards, or only accessible behind environmental puzzles.

One month later, in mid-August, Ubisoft announced that Mirage had "gone gold", meaning its development team had completed their work early, and so its release date was advanced a week early to 5 October.[40] A New Game Plus mode that rewarded players with Bayek's outfit in Basim's wardrobe was added with Update 1.0.6 in December[41] while a permadeath mode first teased in November[42] was delayed into early 2024[43] and added with Update 1.0.7 in February.[44]

Six months after Mirage's release, Boudon and Sala hosted another AMA in late April 2024. When a fan again inquired whether Mirage would have an expansion, Boudon reaffirmed Mirage was "design[ed] as a standalone experience without any DLC plan" and that, while developers "have ideas on how [they] could extend the story of Basim", there were no immediate plans for post-launch media.[45] However, Ubisoft's stance changed by early the next year after its prospects worsened and upon meeting a new investor.

In late January 2025, the French financial newspaper Les Echos published a scoop citing insider sources that Ubisoft had brokered a deal with the Saudi Arabian kingdom's ruling House of Saud after the company CEO Yves Guillemot joined then-President of France Emmanuel Macron's business entourage on his December 2024 state visit to the kingdom's capital of Riyadh.[46] At the time, the company was experiencing severe financial difficulties[46] after having just shut down their Osaka branch's project XDefiant due to insufficient player spending in-game[47] and following dissatisfactory sales of their 2024 titles Star Wars Outlaws [48] and Skull and Bones. This caused Ubisoft's market share to drop nearly 50% and put its value to its lowest level of just under €1.5 billion,[46] prompting Guillemot to release a press statement on 9 January saying that the company had appointed advisors to review and pursue all possible options to return and ensure stakeholders' profits.[48]

In Riyadh, Guillemot met and entered into discussions with executives from Savvy Games Group, a Saudi gaming investment and development company founded and owned by the state's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund. With the wealth fund's deep pockets, having invested nearly $40 billion in gaming in 2023, Ubisoft had seemingly found relief for itself. Guillemot's talks ended with an agreement that Ubisoft would make a Mirage expansion in exchange for Savvy Games Group being the content's main financer, though the deal's exact terms remained confidential. When Les Echos approached Ubisoft for comment, company spokespeople first reiterated their stance from their press release,[46] that Ubisoft would "inform the market [only] if and once a transaction materialize[d]",[48] before refusing to talk to Eurogamer's later follow-up about it and deflecting to focus on the then-recent release of Assassin's Creed: Shadows.[49]

In early August 2025, the Saudi official New Global Sport Conference's Twitter account tweeted that Guillemot would attend the annual convention at the month's end to "share insights on building global IP and gaming as a cultural force".[50] On the convention's first day, during his panel "Gaming Through Time: Ubisoft's Legacy & Future" on the main stage, Guillemot stated that Ubisoft still wanted to "bring the [Middle East]'s rich stories from [history] into games [and] captivate the world",[51] and would start doing so by "bring[ing] Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage to life"[52] in a new, free Mirage story chapter set in the archaeological city and UNESCO World Heritage Site of al-Ula that would release later in the year.[53]

This announcement confirmed Les Echos' scoop, inadvertently also revealing exactly what the Saudis demanded in exchange for their funding the expansion, but was not without criticism. While the Public Investment Fund uses political soft power to, among other things, grow the local gaming industry and invest in the global gaming market,[46] the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, D.C. deemed it one of the least transparent entities in the world due to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's close oversight of it as its Chairman.[54] More recently, the kingdom has engaged in "sportswashing", propaganda meant to divert attention from its wider lack of human rights and Mohammed having personally ordered the assassination of the Saudi Al Watan journalist Jamal Khashoggi according to an assessment by the Central Intelligence Agency.[55] Many outlets like Engadget,[56] IGN,[57] and PlayStation Universe[58] focused solely on the teased expansion in their reports, proving the Saudi campaign's effectiveness, though Eurogamer[49][59] and Screen Rant[60] made passing mention of the kingdom's controversies themselves, while Push Square published a short piece calling a Saudi expansion backed by Saudi funding all highly "suspicious".[61]

A week later on 3 September, Ubisoft backtracked again, this time on their previous statement about not making a Discovery Tour, and released Discovery Tour: Medieval Baghdad for desktop and mobile apps. Advertised as being made for quick access while gaming or on the go,[62][63] it included all the "History of Baghdad" entries,[64] some of which used different images from their in-game version, and copied an element from the standalone title Discovery Tour: Viking Age by having players assume the role of a minor character who solves puzzles while learning about the locale and its customs.[65] In it, an unnamed Alamut Hidden One is tasked by Roshan with helping the Brotherhood complete missions to find and reassemble the Astrolabe's broken pieces before the Ancients claim it for their own purposes.

On 5 October, a month after releasing the Discovery Tour app, Ubisoft released the teaser trailer for the Saudi expansion, officially revealing its name as Valley of Memory and said that the full reveal would be the next day on their YouTube and Twitch channels' simultaneous streams.[66]

Release

Assassin's Creed: Mirage released on 5 October 2023 for Amazon Luna,[67] Windows Microsoft, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S.[3] The Forty Thieves, a downloadable quest was available as a pre-order bonus.[68]

Marketing

After a series of leaks, Ubisoft officially confirmed the existence of Assassin's Creed: Mirage on 1 September.[17][19] On 10 September, Mirage was featured in the 2022 Ubisoft Forward event's Assassin's Creed showcase, alongside the debut of its cinematic trailer.[2][69] When the various editions of the game were announced, Ubisoft ran a promotion through Twitter for the Collector's Case that fans could vote on their favorite design for the exclusive steelbook.[70] Out of two design choices, one was decided the most popular by the time voting closed on 23 September.[71] A new gameplay trailer was revealed on 24 May 2023[26] and gave an official release date of 12 October.[72]

In mid-August, the Echoes of History podcast announced a season titled Baghdad Soundwalks.[73] Hosted by the London-based radio presenter Deana Hassanein and Dr. Olomi, it debuted 21 August and focused on Baghdad's oft-overlooked history and political dramas. It lasted 10 episodes, released weekly, before being renewed for a second season with the same hosts titled Figures of Baghdad that debuted on 16 October. With development having progressed ahead of schedule, the release was later amended to the new date of 5 October.[40] On 22 September, Ubisoft partnered with the American pop-rock band OneRepublic to release the song "Mirage" featuring the Saudi singer Mishaal Tamer to promote the game.[74]

Rating

On 12 September, it was reported on Gamerant that the Microsoft Store's listing for Mirage had an Adults-Only (AO) rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board, which, if valid, could only be explained by the game featuring real gambling. Game Rant speculated that it could also have been a mistake which stemmed from Ubisoft showing that one of their games had an AO rating at the start of their Ubisoft Forward event.[67] Ubisoft subsequently released a statement on the official Assassin's Creed Twitter account declaring that Mirage would not feature gambling or loot boxes.[75]

Ubisoft announced several editions of Assassin's Creed: Mirage in addition to the standard retail edition.

It felt important to us to share all the historical research and knowledge that went into the making of the game. Even if the city was destroyed in 13th century, a lot of information can be found about city.
