'Abis (meaning "the one who frowns",[1] died 860s[2]) was a criminal in Al-Ula, having started out as a petty thief and later robber and murderer, ending up as a head of the head of the robbers who terrorized the valley,[3] operating under the true leader Nimlot.[4]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Born[3] and raised[1] in Al-Ula, 'Abis was described as "sadistic and utterly without mercy",[3] having begun his criminal career as a young man. Obsessed with poison, he brewed experimental mixtures[3] in a laboratory within Musa ibn Nusayr Fort, which he controlled, and used the prisoners as his test subjects.[2]

In the 860s, 'Abis had Basim ibn Ishaq, who had traveled to the region in search of his father, ambushed and taken to the fort while unconscious.[5] With the threat the Hidden One posed seemingly nullified, 'Abis continued to run the prison with an iron fist, as well as continuing his experiments with poisons. Though the death of a well-respected silversmith was thought to be the harbinger of consequences for 'Abis, his downfall came when Basim managed to escape his cell and make his way to the laboratory, where he fatally wounded 'Abis, though not without getting stabbed with a poisonous dagger in turn.[2]

The merchant Dervis would later infiltrate the complex and retrieve the dagger, which he gave to Basim after he was nursed back to health.[2]
