Tokyo (東京), known as Edo (江戸) during the Tokugawa shogunate, is the capital city and most populous prefecture of Japan. It is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, the home of the Japanese Imperial Family, and the Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. In the Edo period, it was the capital of the Tokugawa shogunate.[1] After the Boshin War, the Kyoto Imperial Court relocated to Edo and rechristened the city as Tokyo.

History

On 31 December 2013, the Assassin Gavin Banks and his crew traveled to Tokyo with Saeko Mochizuki, the Mentor of the Osaka-based Japanese Assassins, and Kiyoshi Takakura to gather supplies for their next mission. As the rest of his team occupied themselves around the city, Gavin ran across Tokyo's rooftops to deal with his stress, and watched as fireworks went off at midnight to celebrate the New Year.[2]

On 28 July 2017, the Assassin Tomo Sakagawa worked in an arcade in the Shinjuku neighborhood of Takadanobaba. He later called his superior Hajime Shimada, stating that he had tracked down the Templar Maxime Gorm and mentioned a clinic in Switzerland run by a Dr. Nathalie Chapman. Hajime told him to come and talk at his shop. The next morning, Tomo arrived at the shop in the Akihabara district. They discussed Maxime and Dr. Chapman, while Tomo formulated a plan to infiltrate the clinic.[3]

By 2020, Abstergo Industries had established a facility in Tokyo, where the Templars conducted experiments with Staves of Eden, one of which restored Juhani Otso Berg's ability to walk after previously being crippled by the Assassin Layla Hassan. Abstergo also sought to locate another Staff using the genetic memories of Dr. Kazui, an Assassin informant working undercover at the facility. However, the facility was breached by Layla, Shaun Hastings, Rebecca Crane, and Kiyoshi Takakura, who extracted Dr. Kazui, destroyed his DNA from Abstergo's archives, and escaped after an altercation with Berg.[4]
