Template:War The Human-First Civilization War was a catastrophic conflict that occurred between the First Civilization and the Humans who had developed an immunity to the controlling Pieces of Eden. Little is known about the details of the war, however the distraction of war prevented both parties from observing the impending danger from the heavens; by the time they did, it was too late.
The war ended abruptly, and with far greater casualties on both sides than either had expected. Working together, both parties recovered from the devastation wrought in the final days of war, and begun preparations to prevent such a catastrophe happening again.
The Seeds of War
The First Civilization, small in number but advanced technologically, at some stage found themselves in need of a docile workforce so as to support their world. Rapidly advancing the genetic evolution of already existing species, humanity was born. Initially, each and every member of humanity was born with a chemical neuro-transmitter deep inside their brain, that made them susceptible to the illusions and mind controlling powers of the Pieces of Eden; however over time, interbreeding between humanity and their "gods" caused some to be born without the neuro-transmitter active, or indeed present[1].
At some point during this time, two humans – named Adam and Eve – escaped from their masters with a Piece of Eden known as The Apple, and so begun a series of events that led to war[1].
The War and Catastrophe
Though technologically superior to their creations, the First Civilization were heavily out-numbered by humans. The human contingent was led by the humans who had been born immune to the effect of the First Civilizations technology. These humans were the children of both humans and the First Civilization, hybrids. They used their immunity to get close to First Civilization beings and kill them, seen by the First Civilization as a betrayal of their 'parents' as spoken by Minerva. Thus they were dubbed 'Assassins'. The First Civilization beings slow reproduction meant that any loss of life was a heavy blow and the skill to execute single assassinations a perfect tactic[1].
The war was an even battlefield, with the PoE and additional Knowledge Sense of the First Civilization balanced by the numbers of humans and slow reproduction of the First Civilization. The humans also counted among their ranks Assassins who had the ability to resist the PoE and a diluted version of the Knowledge Sense[1].
Eventually however, disaster struck. War on Earth had prevented the First Civilization from observing the impending dangers from "the heavens" which eventually led to an abrupt, and bloody end to the conflict. Both sides suffered heavy losses due to the disaster, and much of the planet was burnt to cinder. A number of the First Civilization saw the futility of war and their impending extinction as a reason to make peace and turned their attention to creating measures to avoid another future catastrophe they had foreseen. Assassins' (hybrid) ancestors led the humans wanting to make peace with the First Civilization, forgiving their 'parents' for their trespasses, and together they created the temples to warn the future. The war ended with the warring humans winning over the warring First Civilization beings. The peaceful First Civilization beings left their messages for the future and also saw their time come to an end[1].
The leaders of the warring humans now had in their possession multiple Pieces of Eden and an idea of how best to lead humanity into the future. They were heavily scarred by the knowledge their former slavers had interfered with their evolutionary destiny and sought to bring about humanity's 'rightful' path by any means necessary. They utilized the Piece of Eden as tools but were distrustful of any who had made peace with the First Civilization[1].
The Assassins always wanted to free humanity and envisioned a world where all beings could live their lives according to their own will. The Creed 'Nothing is True: Everything is Permitted' became their philosophy, exemplifying the belief that all are free to determine their own existence. They believed the misuse of the PoE to control was against all they had worked and suffered for. They did not betray their 'parents' to liberate humanity, only to see it enslave itself[1].
So thus began a new war. A war for the future of humanity[1].
Aftermath and legacy
- "We built you in our own image, we built you to survive."
- ―Minerva[src]
Both sides suffered cataclysmic losses during the final days of the war, with both being driven to the very brink of extinction; and whilst the First Civilization were still far more technologically advanced than humanity, not even that could save them from the inevitable. Humanity however, who had been built to survive, were more fortunate, and through sheer numbers promised to return stronger than ever[1].
Realizing that the disaster that had struck the Earth once already was due to strike again, the First Civilization constructed a number of Temples, which would help prevent the event occurring again. Alongside these Temples, the First Civilization also built the Vault, which would serve as the beginning of the path to the Temples[1].
Very little evidence of the war, or even the First Civilization survived into recorded history. By the late 12th century, all knowledge of the First Civilization had been forgotten, although their Pieces of Eden continued to affect the world in a myriad of ways; being seen as religious artifacts, or as a means for a number of miracles. By the early 21st century however, a number of First Civilization technologies had been re-discovered and reversed engineered by the Knights Templar, to provide the Earth with a number of technological advancements, including television and the internet[2], but foremost among them being the Animus[3].
