The Grand Maegester of the Order of the Ancients was the title given to the leader of the Order of the Ancients in Great Britain during the Middle Ages. This Grand Maegester's chief purpose was to oversee all of their branches and their actions in region. During the 9th century, the rank was noted to be part of a line of succession of the House of Wessex, passed down as inheritance after King Ælla of Northumbria's death in 867. However, the last noted Grand Maegester, King Alfred, worked against and within his Order under the pseudonym of a "Poor Fellow-Soldier of Christ" to bring about its collapse in England by 878.[1]
