The Aegean Sea is an elongated embayment of the Mediterranean Sea located between the mainlands of Greece and Turkey.

History

During the Peloponnesian War many of the island nations throughout the Agean Sea sided with either Sparta or Athens.[1]

In 48 BCE, the pharaoh of Egypt Cleopatra dispatched Aya and Phoxidas to the sea in search of the Roman general Pompey in an attempt to secure alliance with his army. Aya and Phoxidas destroyed a number of Ptolemy XIII's triremes before meeting with Pompey's fleet, which came under attack from Ptolemy's fleet.[2]

After destroying the enemy ships, Aya and Phoxidas board Pompey's octareme, proposing to him an alliance with Cleopatra, which he accepted.[2]
