Turkey is the premier nation of the Turkic peoples. It historically originated as a large khanate in Central Asia in 552 but over the course of centuries, by circumstance, migrated into Western Asia and conquered it as the Seljuk Empire in the 11th century.

As a result of the dismemberment of the Seljuk state during the period of the Crusades and its eventual conquest by the Mongol Empire, by the end of the 13th century, only a small remnant state, the Sultanate of Rum, survived in Anatolia. When this sultanate experienced a sudden resurgence in power, establishing the Ottoman Empire in 1299, the Turkic nation incidentally became tied with Anatolia as their new homeland. The Ottomans infamously dealt the final blow to the Byzantine Empire in 1453 by conquering Constantinople and making it their new capital. During the reigns of Bayezid II and his grandson Suleiman I, they were strong allies of the Assassin Brotherhood, and the Mentor Ezio Auditore da Firenze led the Turkish Assassins to great heights against the Byzantine Rite of the Templar Order, which sought to restore the former Byzantine Empire.

The Ottoman Empire lasted for several more centuries before it was finally dissolved in the aftermath of World War I. In its ashes was founded the Republic of Turkey.
