The Black Death was a bubonic plague pandemic which ravaged most of Europe, West Asia, and North Africa from 1346 to 1353. It is the most fatal pandemic in recorded human history, resulting in the deaths of 75–200 million people.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1348, the Italian architect Andrea Pisano caught the plague and died while in the midst of trying to complete the Campanile designed by Giotto di Bondone for the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore.[2]

Later that year, the plague entered the German city of Essen, wiping out nearly half of the town's population. The Brothers of the Cross, a Templar Order front, traveled throughout the German countryside promising protection from the disease. The Assassin Lukas Zurburg suspected that they were after the Ankh, a Piece of Eden that purportedly could heal the sick and raise the dead and was said to have been lost somewhere in Central Europe. No explanation was ever recorded, but in 1350, the Brothers of the Cross suddenly disappeared, and Lukas was never seen again.[3]
