Balthazar (died 1562) was a Portuguese captain, slaver, and a member of the Portuguese Rite of the Templar Order during the Sengoku period.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1542, Balthazar worked with local monks in Izumi Settsu and trafficked people into servitude for his homeland. Through his subordinates, he was able to purchase a young girl Tsuyu and sailed to Lisbon. One night, he caught sight of Tsuyu out of her room and ordered his men to capture her. However, while she ran from her overseers, Master Assassin Alvaro Catarribera saved her by killing the overseers.[1]
Balthazar then shot at the Assassin, who dodged it with his gauntlet. The captain soon fled towards the wheel while reloading his pistol. Holding Catarribera at gunpoint, Balthazar nearly shot the Assassin until Tsuyu attacked by placing a bucket over his head. Unable to see, he began to lose his balance and fell overboard,[2] yet he survived this encounter.[3]
In 1562, Balthazar had continued his slavery practice and held a station at a port in Ise.[3] However, he soon learned about the Assassins' presence in the region and had set a trap for them.[4] While meeting with his two workers, he recounted the time that he was beaten by the Spanish Assassin and the young girl. While they explained the number of slaves, another of his guards found and poisoned Tsuyu, who was spying on them.[3]
While the young Assassin was paralyzed, Balthazar soon interrogated her about her movements in Iga and the location of the Imperial Regalia. When she refused, he ordered the guard to cut her fingers from her dominant hand. However, Fujibayashi Masayasu ambushed and killed the guard instantly, surprising both Tsuyu and the Templar.[3] Confronted, Balthazar sent his men to kill Masayasu, but all of his men fell to the shinobi's blade. Attacking him, he managed to apparently wound him and nearly killed him. Before he could, he was struck with a shuriken to the throat by Masayasu, falling to his knees. Bleeding out, he was quickly killed by Masayasu. Afterwards, Masayasu saved Tsuyu and released all of Balthazar's captives before he and Tsuyu left for the merchant district.[5]
